Question Garmin 60 Cx Software Updates

The Garmin GPSMAP 60 Cx Updates & Downloads lists a GPS Chipset Type G software update.

The GPS Chipset Type G update is not the Unit Software update, so what does it do or what is it for.

Any ideas?

Looking at the list of updates throughout the version, I bet it's for the SIRF chipset. that is the part that talks to the satellite. Not the firmware which is the software that garmin puts together to show the maps, etc...

Could be.

My Software Version screen now displays:

Software Version
3.00

GPS SW Version
2.70

(and the Unit ID)

At least I'm all up to date.

Mass Storage --

Did not know this until tonight..
My GPSMap 60CX can be used as an external hard-drive..
1) Main Menu
2) Setup
3) Interface
4) Interface Setup --Bottom USB Mass Storage..

As long as you are hooked up to your computer via USB -- Windows sees the GPS unit as an removable external Hard-drive...

Now I don't think the GPS itself can see what is stored on the unit.. Yet it is interesting that Garmin thought about this..

I take it that you didn't know that you can store more detailed track logs to your Garmin 60 Cx and that you are only limited by the data card size...and not the 20 track logs within the unit.

If you go to the...

1) Main Menu
2) Tracks
3) Setup
4) Data Card Setup

The files that are listed there are stored on the microSD card, and those are the ones that you'll find within your "Removable Disk".

Those files have names such as: 20060527.gpx (the date in military/metric format with a "gpx" extension).

Of course, those files are generated and saved to the micro SD Data Card daily only if you "tick off" the "Log Track To Data Card" box. And it is only written to if Track Log is set to "On".

This stuff may not be in the manual as it was added with a recent firmware update.

Manual? Whats that? The only manuals I've ever looked at are Aircraft Operating Manuals and vehicle owner's manuals.

As tbirdsp mentioned, they were updates. 2.71 was the first version you could save the active track log to your data card. Garmin is now up to 3.00 for the 60 Cx.

From Garmin Support...

I e-mailed Garmin Support and asked what the "GPS Chipset Type G" software was for...their response...

Thank you for contacting Garmin,

I am happy to help you with this. This is for the new Sirf receiver in your
unit. They don't tell us what the update does exactly but I would recommend
avoiding the WebUpdater when you update. Instead click on Updates and
Downloads from our Home page then Additional Software. This will allow you
to choose your unit from a list and then you can run the Unit software. We
are having some trouble with the Web Updater. If you have any additional
comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via email or
call our customer service number below.

Have a nice day!

1. Goto Main menu - hit Menu, and Menu again.
2. Select Setup
3. Select System
4. Now hit the Menu button and one of the choices is Software Version.

Should read something like:
Software Version
3.00

GPS SW Version
2.70

Or something like that if you don't have the latest and greatest.
