Ural on Craigslist needs lots of work

Saw this on Craigslist and thought I would pass it along. Appears to need lots of work. http://fayetteville.craigslist.org/mcy/1025051204.html

Wow, that thing is ugly

The price is right, though. If someone needs it for the sidecar I might make an offer on what's left

Man, I'd love to pick that thing up, just for the SC... Too bad shipping to Ishnookanookaville, AK would be insane...

That, and I am broke, which doesn't help. Sigh!

Ok, so if a complete idiot were to buy this and try to mate it to a CX/GL500 or 650 engine, what would be my -I mean HIS- chance of succes?

A Ural chair would be a bit too much for a CX500 - although the Jupiter/Sputnik further up the list would be an excellent match for one - and like many bike of that era, the cx/silverwing is going to need a fairly intense subframe to mount the hack to.

OTOH, Dauntless does make a subframe for these bikes - not cheap, budget about a Kilo-$ for subframe, struts, heim joints, and steering damper - but it greatly simplifies the install process.

I think that the CX/GL500 bikes are a good candidate for a medium-weight rig - the gearbox and shaft drive are understressed, the engine is water-cooled, they have enough brakes, and are comfortable to spend time on.

Besides, look at the bright side - in short order, you'll no longer be a complete idiot, significant pieces will have gone missing .....

Cheers

Ural-nasty

I seriously considered this bike as a project, and if it were two-wheel drive would have been all over it like 'Uncle Ben's Perverted Mice' - but as a 1 wheel drive in pieces, with something very ugly deep in the engine (I suspect that the crank has grenaded - there's a hollow thump from just forward of the bellhousing region, and about 60 degrees of play before the front pulley moves when you turn the driveshaft.)

The bike was parked due to "transmission failure..." and there is a new gear box that goes with the rig, the bike paint is decent, the tractor seats are gone, the spare wheel exists, but the mounting clamp and nut are on walkabout, the side car is pretty complete - needs a new windshield, paint is dinged and scratched from very careless storage, and much of the mounting hardware (ball joints, 14mm nuts, the metal 'petals' that fit over the lower bike mounts, etc, etc.

It's still interesting, but way more of a project than the ad reveals.

Cheers

Jim

I was more thinking about dumping the CX/GL motor in the Ural frame...

And I'm already missing parts!

Crawford's Ural has a used late-model 750 engine for sale that would be ideal for a Ural like this.

Interesting idea - but I'd wonder if the CX engine might be too tall to fit in the Ural frame, especially towards the back where its inverted transmission sits above the driveshaft?

Other than the fitment issues, this conversion makes sense - the HP and torque are pretty close, excess weight isn't a factor, and there's lots of room between the tug and sidecar to mount a radiator.

Besides, think of how much fun you'd have designing a new tank logo:

"GOTO MUZZI"

and while Hardly Drivesome's go down the road sputtering "POTATO, POTATO, POTATO" you'd whizz past them popping "VODKA, VODKA, VODKA..."

What fun.

Cheers

Jim
