Versys - Moto of the year for 2008?

Seems the Versys is getting a lot of accolades as Bike of the Year by a few magazines. Was getting ready to buy a WABS but maybe should consider thre Versys? Any thoughts???

Ugly bike but functionally very sensible. The 17' front wheel's gonna limit your dual sporting but the parallel twin idea is really pretty sweet.

I've ridden those and the motor is smooth with a nice low end for being a 650 twin I was really surprised by it, especially when I saw the low price. Inverted forks, brakes are decent. Crushes the Suzuki SV and has a lot more clearance and functionality.

If there was some way to take the ugly outta that headlight, that bike would be a great fun commuter and all arounder.

You just get some window tint and make a Punisher Skull out of it:

Ugly? He's comparing it to a DL650. Pot, meet kettle.

The tests seem to go back and forth between the Suzuki and this bike. If you liked a bigger bike, or a slightly more off-road capable bike, then this would favor the Wee. And in the US, if you wanted ABS, the Kawi isn't available with it. But the Versys appears to be the sportier pavement bike.

Think Nissan Pathfinder (Wee) vs. Nissan Murano (Versys).

It's in the "SUV of bikes" category, which is why the Murano comparison is apt.

350Z would be something like the SV650, FZ6, etc.

It's a sports car, so it would compare to a true sports bike (e.g., a GSXR750).

Who says its in the SUV of bikes category? I wouldn't put it there. Ok, maybe not 350Z, more like Mazdaspeed 3 or 6, or Suby WXR, or Neon SRT-4.

I won't argue with you, but Versys supporters often make the argument that it is just as good an adventure bike as the Strom or GS, and I don't think you can have it both ways, anymore than you can argue that a Mazdaspeed 3 has the utility of a Pathfinder or Explorer.

Kind of a silly discussion, we all use bikes in so many ways, any categorization is going to have many faults. My only point was that the difference between a Strom and a Versys is basically just moving the slider from a more utilitarian vehicle to a sportier vehicle.

Totally depends on which engine you like.
If you like parallel twins get the kawa
If you like V-twins get the Wee

Neither bike is really a full blown adventure bike. (Really there's not many that are)
And both bikes are capable of being used for adventure traveling.
With pluses and negatives on both sides.
Both are ugly. Both are big, Both are tall, Both are modern Japanese bikes that will probably last 100,000 miles with out anything super major going wrong.

If I had to do it over again.
I'd get the WeeABS

hmm

Well, I've owned a dl1000, klr650, gs1100 and gs1150. I sold the gs1150 after I test rode the versys. Can't explain it, it is simply the most fun bike I have ever ridden. Fast, sporty, comfortable in the city or on the interstate, light, nimble etc... People who own them simply love them.. If mine got run over by a bus tomorrow I go straight to the dealer and get a new one, no second thoughts.
