Alcohol Stoves

    This stove is a knock off of the White Box Stove that has been around for a couple of years now. Here is the link to the White Box Stove web site. http://whiteboxstoves.com

    The original white box had rivets like the Stever Stove but now it has a roll sealed top edge which is a lot stronger than the open edge. Also the White Box comes with more fuel capacity that the Stever Stove so you can boil larger amounts of water.

    The White Box Stove costs a little more but better quality and a lifetime warranty may be worth it. Remember you get what you pay for in this world.

    That is a nice stove.

    But i think i will take a small step down in strength and quality, to save over $11 a stove. that is a 55% savings.
    but for me, the best part is supporting a fellow ADV member.
    If our purchases give Us a useful product built with quality and pays for Steve to get out there and Ride some more. then I say YAY!

    As to Stever stove quality, very nice for the price.
    the only wish i would have is to have the cuts all be perfectly square and the exact same height between units. but it doesn't matter unless you are trying to set something on more than one at a time. and I can't think of a easy Cheap way for Steve to get them all exactly the same.

    and I don't think it would be worth all the trouble either.

    Okay, Fireman Frank.

    Here's how weak the Stever Stove is

    It only holds a 200 pound guy. I'm sure this is not enough for the weight of an average dinner.

    Also, the SteverStove is the same dimensions with the same flame outlet height as the white box as far as I can tell by comparing pictures. So the fuel capacity and boil time is the same. Any difference would be within a couple tenths of an ounce or so.

    Sure, you can buy a White Box Stove from this spammer for nearly three times the cost of the SteverStove. It's done on a machine with a nicer rolled lip.

    Or you can buy about three SteverStoves which function exacly the same, for about the same cost as one of this guy's stoves, and support an ADV rider who's helping put together WestFest 2010 and cooking ribs for members.

    Go spam somewhere else Fireman Frank. I'll save the salty language since this is not in Jo Momma.

    :hide Fireman Frank is my fault I guess, I linked this stove over on the BackPackingLight forums in a thread asking about alcohol stoves. Sorry if it causes a stink... I didn't even know the whitebox stoves existed honestly, the thing I always saw when looking at similar style alcohol stoves is flimsy beer can creations.

    Hey, when i got mine I weighed 280#. the first thing I did was stand on it and wiggle around like a Go-Go dancer. (not a pretty sight, your welcome)
    and Nothing, no flexing, no wrinkles, no give at all. and the seam was still tight on the top lip all the way around.

    With a rolled lip, the White Box should be stronger, a bit. but what are you gonna do, park a truck on it?
    Also the White box comes in two sizes, but only One diameter. the "Original" is ~1/4" taller & the solo is ~1/2" shorter than the stever's 2".
    (they don't list a diameter, but the run time on the original is so close to a stever I think they have a slightly smaller diameter)
    and they don't have a simmer option. :wink:

    So what do you get for the extra money, a slightly cleaner look and maybe a more uniform unit. but even if my three Stevers aren't perfectly the same, they came out of, at least, two build lots and the difference is less than a 1/16"
    and that is pretty F'n close in my book. I know I couldn't do better.

    great stove for a great price.

    I got a chance to play with my stoves today. Very happy with them. The simmer stove works perfectly with my 3 cup Moka coffee pot. Took about 4 minutes to brew. This means I can make breakfast and coffee at the same time :clap. As an added bonus, the stove, turned upside down, fits inside the pot without a problem.

    I read all the posts, but I didn't see one thing... maybe I missed it.
    Does the bottom of the stove get warm/hot?
    Would it burn whatever it's placed on?

    The whole stove does get hot, but also cools very quickly.

    I will try mine on a 2x4 tomorrow and see what happens on a long burn.

    I would be cooking inside my van and want to make sure I won't burn it down :eek1 :lol3

    So it would be wise to get a brick or something to place it on, maybe something spill proof?

    I would think a small cookie sheet with a lip would work fine.

    A air-bake style would insure no heat got through to the under surface, but no lip.
    I'll try and take temp readings with the non-contact thermometer too.

    Any kind of tile from the hardware store like lowes and home depot would work too, and cheap!

    I have a couple of those same coffee pots!

    I have used the stove on the tailgate of my truck- no damage, but YMMV, IANAL. etc... I won't be paying for your burnt up van:deal :wink:

    I burn them on my plywood bench top all the time and they leave no mark, but I also would be interested in the actual temps right under the stove. (thanks MPanther)

    I have used mine in my kitchen and find that the fumes from the methyl alcohol in heet bother me. This probably would not matter at all if I was outside. I also find that the fumes from denatured alcohol do not seem to bother me that bad. Be careful burning in the van.

    Ok, digital "meat" thermometer in water.
    Non-contact hand held thermometer good to 932f.
    Stove and simmer loaded with 1.5 oz Heet.
    Pot with 4 cups water and a see though lid on.
    Ambient temp 60f

    Stove on ceramic trivet (like a tile)
    1 minute warm up
    cooking for 5 minutes Lower Stove Temp = 215f Tile = ~138 Water = 145
    10 minutes - flame out - LST = 220f T = ~138f W = 200f
    1 minute cool down - LST = 117f T = ~120f W = 200f

    Moved to simmer, had it warming up while doing the cool down.

    Simmer on 3/4" pine board
    1 minute warm up
    @ 1.5 minutes cook time water boiled at 206f indicated.
    @ 5 minutes LST = 158f B = 145f W = 208f boiling.
    @ 10 minutes LST = 160f B = 145f W = 208f boiling.
    @ 14 minutes - flame out - LST = 160f B = 145f W = 208f
    1 minute cool down LST = 117f B = 125f W = 207f
    10 minute cool down LST = 95f B = 85f W = 185f
    (done with pot still sitting on simmer stove)

    And there ya go.

    I think the ceramic trivet was pulling heat out of the stove faster then the board and radiating it for better cooling.
    There is No marking on the board. looks just like it did when i started.

    With this info, i would just use a nice 6"X6" 3/4 pine or better board under it.
    (or maybe a nice looking hard wood, 'cause it's fancy)

    If you are cooking pasta, heat the water to boiling on a stove and keep it there with a simmer for about 14 min on 1.5 oz fuel.
