It was 70 mph "indicated". However, with street biased tires and my 16 tooth front sprocket I can do that (probably 63-64 mph true) under 5000 rpm. Going to pull the wheel tonight. Can't seem to get the bike in neutral. May have tweaked the gear selector or the clutch lever when I hit on that side. Thanks everyone for all the words of wisdom and well wishes. VAC
Calmer than you. Mike, Best wishes for the quick recovery!! Seriously though.... After your and Bruce's traumas, I may never ride without honest to goodness MX boots. Does anyone make concrete boots?
Thanks for the write up Mike. Glad to see you're OK, and that there isn't too much damage to the bike. Heal up my friend, LF is just around the corner!
I was wondering the same thing. I commute from Spotsylvania to Stafford a few times a week and might be familiar with this area. Glad you survived. I-95 is a rather adventurous stretch of road.
Sounds like your on the road to recovery Mike, hope you heal fast. We have never met but I have passed you going home in the evening while you were on your hack, my wife and I are on a 2011 Yellow GS Adventure. Speaking of hacks, I saw yours yesterday at Guy's garage. I dropped off a new to me 06 KLR for the doctor to operate on.
Ah ha! I saw you on I95 about a week ago heading South from Stafford. It was a cold day and I saw more bikes that day than I did on any summer day. Y'all were getting it pretty good. I was on the red 2008 GSA.
Yup, that was us, I remember seeing you. I/we normally stay out of the hammer lane cause it gets fooked up by cagers using electronic devices. The slow and middle lanes have become my friend over the past 22 yrs of commutin to DC. I normally use both lanes, weaving back and forth to keep the tires from flat spotting , at least that is what I tell the wife.
Mike, Glad to hear you're ok. It seems that ATGATT proves its worth again. Whenever I think about a shortcut while suiting up, I recall the kid I saw in Miami: sandals, shorts, helmet, on a scooter, throttling with the right hand and texting with his left. So it goes. And gee, you still have that swell leather stuff. But if wear that to the office they might get the wrong idea. Heal up, ride soon. Ed
Glad to hear your alright. Getting off at those speeds on 95 with only the damage you received is a testament to the gear, always wear the gear. Hope to see you and those awesome hacks sometime soon.
Typical KLR owner. " I will reuse that tube" Kidding aside, glad to hear you made it out of that with "minor" injury. A rear blow out happens FAST. It has happened to me twice on a KLR. Luckily both times I felt some thing funny and was able to slow down before the tire completely deflated. For those who have not had the fun of a blowout, It is kind of like whacking the throttle open on a sheet of ice. You have almost no control, and the tail wags back and forth violently. Excellent job on the play by play and the pictures. Speedy recovery VAC!
Yep, I'm a cheap bastard. Probably not any more though! Got into the habit of re-using tubes as the Hacked-KLR eats rear tires every 4K miles. Mishap occurred at about the 165 mile marker. Didn't pull wheel yet but will do tonight. VAC
Great movie. Me and H14 actually work with a guy named Donnie who will come to the lunch table halfway thru break and ask questions about the conversation we started 15 minutes ago. He hears that line a lot!! Hope you're doing good Mike and healing up allright. See ya at LF
Glad you are OK. It's been about 22 years since I tread around them highways regularly...you can have em! I know the feeling. I had the exact same "almost" crash on I96 this summer...rear tire got flat, lots of fishtails, trucks nearby...but for the Grace of God I was able to get it to the shoulder upright. Cheers. Happy Holidays. Get better soon. I think the only real therapy is to get back on the bike and get the confidence back. I'm trying on mine...
