It depends on the mileage he expects to do, to me. A low miles 92 would not be an issue to me if it's meant to be a first bike and just a run about. If he is planning long trips and wants to add electrical gadgets then find a newer one.

+1 on the 16T front sprocket and a rejet. It'll fly...mine does 60 easy, all day, and i'm 175. Will go faster but...why... :)

Went to Canada early last fall - about 1800 miles from my house. Me, my riding gear and camping equipment weighed 255#. I don't think I hurt the bike (total miles by the time I got back - 4600), but it sure was a strain to keep it going 60mph. If you're loaded up for camping, I don't think it's more than a 50mph machine.

BTW, I'm pretty sure updated stator and dual pot calipers came in the 2001 model year. Mine is (2000 model year) made in 99, and has the 35w/35w headlight, single pot brake.

Someone on here mentioned that they had a stock Yamaha tachometer on their XT225, anychance we can get pics? I wish I had one.
It's funny, I hit the limiter on my wr250r way more often than the XT, even though it has a way higher redline.

on mine, a 94, i'll normally get 100-110 around town before i have go into the reserve side. last summer i did go a nice ride with some co-workers, appx. 112 miles and still had appx.28 of my tank not counting the reserve. i remember, because that was my first big ride on that bike and when i hit the gas station i only put apps .70-.75 of a gallon. all stock.

Did Yamaha use thread lock compound on the studs holding the sprocket to the hub? (pix here)

It needs to be uncorked to go faster loaded. Exhaust, intake and jetting.

I had done the Z-1 mod, and opened up the pilot jet setting, but never messed with the intake. In its present condition it will out run my brother's stock XT225 everytime. Maybe I'm spoiled on my FZ-1, but I can't see it cruising comfortably at 60mph with a 255# load.

so today, i had my bike up on the stand cleaning the chain. after a good cleaning and lube, i started her up and worked the throttle a little to help get back to operating temp. I had just rode around town apprx 5-10 miles. anyways, i put her in first and worked the throttle just a little, when i heard a ticking noise. so with the bike in idle, i could hear the noise. it sounds to me, the noise from a car when the lifters are nocking. i could not isolate the sound, in fear of hurting my little bike, so i shut it off and got it down from the stand and parked it. has anyone had a similar situation or sound? also is it ok to ride it to the shop and have a mechanic check her out?

In first gear, back wheel probably rotating. I'm not surprised. What's it sound like off the 'stand' & in neutral?
