like it says, anyone encountered any hassles, might be doing some gentle trails (gulp!) as previous planned transport has gone pearshaped
My first trip to Morocco in 1972 was on a TriBSA café racer, which was even less suitable than a Bandit. But the roads in Morocco are great. If you want to try a piste, the best I can recommend in terms of being both well surfaced (for absolute novices) and fabulous scenery runs east from Khénifra to Itzer through the Middle Atlas. Head out of Khénifra on a narrow asphalt road and after a while it turns to beaten earth. Then follow your nose (or compass) to keep heading east. Tim
cheers mate ,i'm already using some of your info on the gs site, very useful.leaving for morocco from scotland on the 6th of sept . 1 week to go
I rode across North Africa in 1977 on a Moto Morini 3 1/2 Sport with clip ons and I had a great time as I knew no better. Not nearly as cool as a TriBSA but in those days things seemed a little less specialised.
My TriBSA had clip-ons, rear sets and the close-ratio RRT2 gearbox which was good for 70 mph in first but pretty useless for uphill starts. The funny thing is that I can't remember even making a packing list, but then my luggage was what I could balance on the tank between my arms. I recently found an airmail letter (remember the flimsy thin paper?) to my parents letting them know I was OK and that I had had to put some oil in the bike. There was an attempted coup against Hassan II whilst I was in the country--the Air Force's Phantom jets tried to shoot down his plane on his return from Paris--so things were a bit edgy. I was doing 80mph on a wonderful blacktop and came round the corner to a checkpoint with guns and spike strips--only just managed to stop in time. I spent most of that summer in southern Spain. Then my brother got involved as a crew member of 'The Albatros' in the Frederick Forsyth-funded attempted coup in Equitorial Guinea, but that's another story. Tim
made it 4781 miles in total right down as far as merzouga , through small sections of washed out road(would you believe it rained) bike running a bit rough now - nothing cleaning the air filter won,t sort out. other than that the bike never missed a beat.
I love this thread as the polar opposite of the over-planning, over-documenting, over-packing threads I see all the time. (not that there's anything wrong with that but this is cool too) SUMMARY: doc: hey, going on the adventure of a lifetime in northern africa, do i need anything special? tim: already did it with no preparation, no problems conch: ditto what he said doc: just got back, you guys were right gotta love men of few words who just go out there & do it!
