Nearly been there myself with a blown L5/S1 disk, luckily avoided surgery but was a long process back to good health, now bad but usually bearable sciatica kicks up 2-3x a year. Well good luck and yes follow the Doc, we want you in fighting shape next year.

I ruptured at the L5/S1 in December... fell to the ground, couldn't get up, went to the hospital. Thought it was getting better, back to lifting, tennis, motos. Big mistake. Met with a a Neurosurgeon in May and got an MRI. 7 months later still significant sciatica but much better. I was close to going for a Diskectomy but have held off. Good luck man.
