Meeting a mate in Cooma after the Moto GP.

Any suggestions for the most interesting roads to take ... dirt or tar but nothing too heroic as I'm travelling alone.

    Emphasis on:

    1. As few cops as possible (not done the Moto GP thing before so unsure how many cops are out there waiting for us)
    2. Twisty bits
    3. A bit of dirt thrown in - the 990 loves it
    4. Max 2 days from Cowes to Cooma

    Any advice appreciated :thumb

To keep it simple ...to Buchan, take the Barry Way to Jyndabyne, turn right at the roundabout or Mackillops etc etc.

Should give you a few jollies - I'm heading down that way this Friday :thumbup

    Easy Day ride.

Or Phillip Island-Mirboo North then Grand ridge road, back way to Orbost then up the Bonang turn left over Mckillops bridge then up the Barry way to Jindy.
Little longer but well worth it if you want a good mix of easy dirt and great twisty tar roads.

How about through Dargo then Cooma via MT Hotham or Omeo via Dogs Grave.

Me and Dan are doing Cowes - Omeo via the Dogs Grave then on to Walwa Monday night if you'd like to join us? From Walwa you could work your way through Tumut and the back roads of Adaminiby to Cooma, did that last year it was great! :D

Great Alpine Way is policed heavily over MotoGP weekend. I'd be more inclined to take the Barry Way option. Little to no traffic and no cops.

We're planning a trip at the end of October and are considering 'The Barry Way' as a route from Melb to Jindabyne.

What we're wondering is how much snow will be about at that time?

Was hoping to include Dargo on the way so a suggestion of a route there would be good for us and the OP.

    Thanks!

Chances of snow in October, bugger all to none. It's already starting to thin out.
The bigger problem will be if you have to do any river crossings, as levels will be very high this spring due to the heavy snow fall.

Cowes to Healesville then head to Narbethong to Alexandria

Then head to mansfeild to Bridge Creek to Oxley to Myrtleford to Bright then up to Falls creek and take the dirt road over the back to Blue Duck Hotel and onto Omeo.

Then head out to Benambra and onto the Barry way to Jindabyne then head out past the staion resort to the back way to cooma

Maybe I'm a lucky guy, but I did the Great Alpine Way on the Monday after the GP last year and didn't see Mr Plod at all. Lotsa bikes tho, and one fatal, so might be different this year. GAW pretty technical after Hotham, I was tired after a big weekend and would have enjoyed it a lot more if I'd taken a night off in Omeo or somesuch. This year I have more time...............

Get off your knees fella :lol3

The road heads from Omeo to Dargo - seems like an east / west type of arrangement :scratch

Haven't done the road after the GP myself, just going on the Police Media release. They'll probably release the same info this year to say they'll be patrolling the GAR over that weekend. Worth keeping an eye on VicPol website I'd think.
Bare in mind we have both undercover bikes and cars down south. I've even seen undercover Gixxer thous.

Keep in mind that the GP is a week earlier this year & the GAR & also the Kiandra to Khancoban Rd may still be closed.

It is normally opened after the long weekend. Check with the local police or national parks office for confirmation.

Our return trip from the GP last year (on road bikes) lead us from Bairnsdale to Bruthen, up to Buchan, back down to Orbost before heading up the Bonang to Bombala & then Cooma. The dirt sections are fine on a road bike.

Next day consisted of the Snowie Mts Highway from Cooma to Tumut then up through Wee Jasper to Yass, great fun bit of road, will be even better next on the DR650 instead of the Fireblade.
