This weekend, a buddy of mine had similar issues - non DR bike. There was a pinhole in the float and gas had gotten in. Variable fuel delivery followed. A little JB Weld over it and bingo. If it comes down to it, I have a bone stock carb with 5100 miles and a stock (unknown internals) with 14000 miles on it. I can ship it to you and we can settle later. Sorry I don't have more to offer - not my strong suit.
.028-.031 IIRC I'll try to find it in the manual before I have to go. Maybe someone else is following along and is positive. Found it: .028-.031.
It sounds like its running lean. You're also at about 12,000 feet, no? When it's running and at operating temperature, try making the idle mixture richer.
Fuel is coming to the crab (CARB) great. Have an Acerbis tank with dual petcocks, both have been on reserve since the day I installed them over 7500 miles ago. Thanks for the offer of a carb, that's great. We are on two bikes, so at a push I will switch my carb out for Colleen's to see if that is the problem..I expect it is. I'm going to remove the darn thing AGAIN...but this time search around town for a compressor and give it a real good clean. If that doesn't do it I'll start switching parts until I find what is wrong. It def feels like fuel though...comes on strong like a train for a moment then bogs off until you let off the gas. At full dec-cel....KAPOW!
Funny thing mine runs great. Yes 12,000 or so maybe less. I've played with the mix screw. Seems like something is stopping fuel getting through to hold max revs.
Minor vapor lock on tank cap - recent sand. Rideable but possibly vapor locked a bit? Test ride and when it won't deliver fuel, open tank cap. Fishin' here, but.....
I put a set on my DR in Calgary for my ride from Alaska to South Carolina. At 3,300 miles the rear was about gone. Now this was the 130/17 size. The 140/17 has a lot more tread depth and I think now they have a center rib. If you go this way, I'd get the 140/17 size. They were kind of loose on the dirt. More then I expected. Now have a set of Shinko 244's. For the money I think they're kind of hard to beat. My other choice is TKC 80's but they're a lot of money for the miles you get out of them. Take care, AK Greg
Man thats weird nothing has shown up in the carb, those symptoms sound just like a bike that's sucking water or a chunk of something into the mainjet when the throttle is opened. No water has shown up in the fuel or you would have noticed it with your checking on things.
While there are certainly other reasons the mixture could be lean, altitude makes the mixture richer. Regards, Derek
That won't do anything noteworthy at larger openings. What is the fuel level in the float bowl with the engine running and the bike level? Regards, Derek
It seems I got all my measurements wrong: short height and inseam, short arms.... At least I think highly of myself
James: just a thought. There is a filter under the seat that feeds clean air to the diaphraghm. Check to see that it isn't filthy. Colleen has been riding in the #2 slot the whole trip and it may be plugged from your dust.
