My father in law is building one of these. He is using a Willis Butterfield kit that doesn't require the frame to be cut(if I heard him correctly)and run it with a hack. I might be able to get some pictures if anyone is interested.

How could the frame not be cut?

(Genuine question, not being a smart-ass.)

Pretty sure not only will he be cutting the frame he will have to widen it and make it longer to work.

Nice post! I have never seen a /6 or /7 VW conversion. So appreciate the pic's! Interesting he is using either Willis 4's or Webley/Vickers Exhaust Boxes. I am guessing the trans adapter is a Willis or W/V Fresno casting that has been smoothed at the top to match the trans. The only way to tell if the trans has been altered with out opening it up is to see if intermediate shaft has been repositioned. To see that the trans has to be out. If it has been? I would bet it has a nice roll on at top end.

COOL POST THANKS!

I sent him an email. Hopefully pics will be coming. He only really mentioned having an issue routing the headers and didn't mention anything about cutting the frame. I'll let you know.

You guys were right, you do have to mod the frame 2" longer and widen the bottom. He is currently trying to work out a way to avoid the VW carburetors. I think he should go with something like this.

That pic goes back awhile! That was taken at Irvine Ca. 2002 or 3? Maybe? I don't remember for sure???? The bike is a Butterfield, actually the pre production bike to the 100 kits they made. I still have that bike. It is a SP 1600 cc. The carbs are Honda CB 450 carbs. The bike on the left is a 1954 BMW /3 with a Steib and it had a 1200 cc VW motor built by John Rosema. I sold that to a private collector in Australia not long after that event. Both of these bikes are kick start only.

Mine kick-starts just fine. In all honesty, on a warm day it's 1-2 kicks tops.
