Just stumbled across this thread, what a GREAT idea! Here's my tribute/thanks to my lovely wife...

We weren't always motorcycle riders. We started out as downhill mountain bikers early in our relationship. Brandi was always far more competitive than I was and got into downhill racing, often besting a lot of the mens' times in races she entered:

A few shots from her mtn biking days:

A lot of our other activities were equally adrenalin-fed... skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, etc... Then in the fall of 2007, she was a passenger in a motor vehicle accident. The vehicle rolled and the roof partially collapsed, impacting on the top of her head. The result was a burst fracture of the T6 vertebrae.

After some serious surgery and a two week hospital stay, we were on our way home... but she was packing some extra hardware. Airport scanners are always a little extra 'fun' nowadays.

Rehab was a long, difficult and painful journey for her, with a lot of our activities falling by the wayside in the wake of her injuries. I won't sugar coat it... it sucked ass, bigtime. We had to work pretty hard to redirect our energy; to find new common ground and to find things we could continue to enjoy together.

I'd ridden motorycles off-road for years, and with gas prices rising I figured it was time to finally complete the licensing process and pick up a bike for commuting in order to save a few bucks. Not long after that I was working towards getting my instructor's license here in BC (equivalent of an MSF rider coach certification). The following year Brandi decided she wanted a bike as well, so we found her a showroom leftover 2008 DRZ400SM at our local dealer for a great price. A few months later, she was fully licensed. Here she is after completing her road test... SUCCESS!!

Motorcycle riding might not be the same as hurtling ourselves down a mountainside on DH bikes, but it beats rotting away in front of the idiot box!

Not even a month after she earned her unrestricted license, we were off on our first road trip, and have averaged about 2500-4000 miles of road trips each summer since then.

Always happy to get on the bike and hit the road:

And sometimes more than just a little happy!

And of course, when things go wrong with the bike... she gets a little pouty. (hamming it up with her broken clutch cable)

The smile returns quickly once we're rolling again, tho :)

She even prefers beer over wine! Choosing which beer is often a tough decision, tho...

Riding with buddies is always a good time... but I can't think of anyone I'd rather ride with than my best friend. Here's to you, B! :arch

As the author of this thread, I can say I love the pics of the ladies (or any rider) out there doing their thing. Looking at those x-rays with the pins and screws and other ortho hardware gives me substantial pause. Let's be careful out there, people. If I knew I were going to live this long, I'd have taken a lot better care of myself. The goal is to be at this for a long time, OK?

She only passed her test bike a few months prior to our 15,000 mile Oz to UK adventure. She'd never ridden in the rain before or for longer than 20 minutes to work. She'd also never eaten hunks of lamb with chopsticks, but when in China, needs must!
