Is the bmw f650gs the most advanced single cylinder bike out there? ABS and fuel injected?

Im not really speaking of racing single thumpers, more of the street riding kind. I think a ktm 525exc is pretty advanced.:D

Ummmm the folks at HDT USA may currently manufacture the most advanced thumpers. Well at least a few national militaries think they are the most advanced, if not they'd be riding BMWs.

    -Diesel fuel injected
    -100+ MPG
-Break land speed records at bonneville
-all the versatility of a KLR

Good question, and if ABS and FI are the criteria, then it may be the GS. It also may be the smoothest and most street worthy for touring, IMO. Ain't considered by most a great dirt bike though, although it is fine on gravel and forest roads.

Faint praise. Those are land speed records for the diesel thumper class, something like 95 mph for the normally-aspirated version, maybe over 100 for the turbo model.

It's really hard to figure out what advanced with regard to a thumper actually is.

When I think of a thumper, I think of a bike that is, by nature, simple and rugged.

I think diesel is a worthy advancement, but within the whole realm of diesel engines, I'm not sure the HDT diesel is the most advanced.

A thumper with paralever would be a worthy advancement. A significantly lighter thumper would be a worthy advancement. One that comes with a toolset that isn't shit would also be a worthy advancement. What I'd be interested in seeing is one that has a magnetorheological fluid in the shock absorbers to further tune them.

Technologiacally advanced in not in the criteria for military application. If it were, they would be driving a Porsche instead of a hummer. Most every vehicle used for military purpose is diesel. That does not make it "advanced". It makes it lower maintenance, which is one of hte criteria.

That's not exactly true. Military battlefield vehicles are diesel because of a NATO treaty declaring that there shall be a single battlefield fuel, namely Jet A, or a further refined kerosene/diesel.

It was made as a logistical choice, and for few other reasons.

i personally like EFI... but i'm sorry - if i'm buying a DS thumper (or any motorcycle for that matter) you can stick your ABS where the sun don't shine

I think KTM probably has the tech edge at the moment... as far as engine power/reliabilty/flexibility

The military hates advanced. They've traditionally always specified machines that were less advanced than was typical for their era. The diesel motorcycle is so they can use JP8 fuel in every military vehicle. Practical, not advanced.
