So, last night I was up late...the result of too many cups of coffee, 3M Scotchlite black reflective tape I ordered off ebay, some regular reflective tape you find at Northern Tools, a pair of suitable scissors, and a flashlight. So I get to the garage and my GS is sitting there, all by itself and in the dark...here comes Daddy to the rescue! This is the result... What do you think? Is it too obnoxious? Carlos.
Hell NO...MINE is obnoxious. CAGERS move to the next lane, though. <a href="http://s635.beta.photobucket.com/user/RMWBMW/media/R1200GS%20Vario%20Reflectors/ReflectiveTapeWithoutFlash-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="https://www.advrider.com/advrider-photobucket-images/images/R/RMWBMW_R1200GS%2520Vario%2520Reflectors_ReflectiveTapeWithoutFlash-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"/></a> <a href="http://s635.beta.photobucket.com/user/RMWBMW/media/R1200GS%20Vario%20Reflectors/ReflectiveTapeWithFlash-2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="https://www.advrider.com/advrider-photobucket-images/images/R/RMWBMW_R1200GS%2520Vario%2520Reflectors_ReflectiveTapeWithFlash-2.jpg" border="0" alt="ReflectiveTapeWithFlashLARGE"/></a>
No, it's just about right. Nice work. Obnoxious would be a set of loud pipes pointing astern to warn overtaking traffic.
Heh. Looks great! I just put some DOT-C2 on the bottom of my hard bags. I read somewhere that someone did this in case the bike is tits up in a ditch the rescuer's flashlight will have something to show other than dirty metal. I have bands of the C2 wrapped around the cases, too, for side conspicuity while on the road & parked. I also popped the reflector off my Shad topcase and replaced the white backing paper with Reflexite SOLAS tape.
Hey that's why they call it "conspicuity tape"...goal achieved! No excuse for anyone to rear end your bike
Yep...no problema...the tape is metallic backed and doesn't interfere with opening/closing. Update 12/14/2012:...Those 'squares' of alternating RED and WHITE are slightly BELOW the mating surface...thus allowing the opening and closing without problems. Available at Grainger...
I did the same thing on my 1150RT with 3M Scotchlite, but found some red colored reflector tape at Gall's. I was told by a LEO that in some states it is illegal to have white reflectors behind the rear axle unless you were driving a truck longer than ?? feet long. I used red just to safe, but I doubt it matters as long as it makes you more conspicuous. I also used red on my GS but don't have a picture. Believe me, it's bright from behind. I've ordered some for my 12RT.
I have the same on the back and sides of mine, I swear by it! One thing I read years ago at the MOA forums was to put the reflective tape on the BOTTOM of the Bags and the Skid plate. That way (not that it would ever happen) if you are off the road down an embankment the bike will be easier to spot in the dark. They rarely land standing upright :eek1
I like your way of thinking on this one. But going one step further...if the pig landed with the top of the saddle pointing towards the lights, what good is tape on the bottom? Should it not wrap around 360°?
I see the problems: #1 Too much time on pavement and not enough time in the dirt !!!!!!! #2 Go faster, never worry about being overtaken...good grief! Glad to be of help...
