All right... Let's try this one more time! I know there's ATK owners (and riders) out there in ADV-land. Let's see em! Action shots are mo bettah! Tips and tricks? Are there any hard-won maintenance secrets? (like the valve clearances ) This is the one I'm lookin at: Its a '96 605. Right now, its kick-only and without a DS kit. Both are going to need to be fixed as the $$ comes in. As you can see, there's no frame guard. Can you say 'hot legs?!' Looks like there hasn't been an issue with this particular kickstand. Hope to keep it that way! M

Here's my 605 right after I bought it. Shortly after I had an accident induced brake malfunction (locked up) and had a firey crash on the street. I let it sit for a few months and almost sold it, then Bones blog inspired me to fix her up a bit. I'll post pics when I'm done, but don't expect anything as cool and trick as Bones bikes, I'm just a fat old desert rat.
You ever find a tank for it? I read that you were looking. Oh, and did the big tank thing ever materialize? M

That's the Acerbis 1.1 gallon auxilliary number-plate gas tank. As designed, it's supposed to mount to the fork tubes. The problem is that the brake hose won't clear with it mounted that way, nor can you mount a headlight. It took a bunch of time to fabricate that bracket out of tubing, then brazing or welding every joint. It's a one-off that only fits that ATK triple clamp. I'm not entirely happy with it but it was the only way to add the needed range to the bike.
It would be pretty pricey. The Acerbis tank alone, sells for about $100. The headlight (without the shell) is $40 for a Chinese one and $100 for a Hella. It wouldn't be an inexpensive solution.
I've heard rumors that a Katoom aux tank ala the Dakar bikes would mount on the subframe opposite the exhaust. Thoughts? M edited to add: quick search turned up this tank on abay
Anything is possible with a welder and enough desire. Maybe one of the XR rear saddle tanks would fit? I don't know.
I'll play. hmmm...seems to be something going on with Smugmug, so I'll post some pics later. Basic maintenance is easy. It takes about 30 minutes to adjust the valves, including r&r the seat and tank. It's kinda weird to check the oil, I still haven't been able to determine what my oil level should be. I'm in the process of fixing my dragging clutch. The clutch is a real PITA to get to, needing more disassembly than most due to the timing belt. I wish it had a larger tank and a real sub-frame, but I really like riding this thing.
Kieth at ADB has been trying to get some new tanks made for some time, I like the Acerbis Aux tank but think Bones' use of the KTM side panel tank is the schit http://bonesrantsandraves.blogspot.com/ . I heard from Rusty about the ATK site and will post about it on TT and here on JM so we don't get this thread bumped. -HFM
Guess I should chime in here. ATK's suck! They fill all my winter time with fun projects. I am up to 5 now. 95 605 custom SM 2 99 605ESDS's 1 2000 DT600 (Adjustible WB headstock) 1 2002 605DTSM Currently on loan to my 16year old Son I think they are one of the best all-around DS bikes out there. Lee at ATK is still racing (team of 3) in Barstow to Vegas and others, I think they placed 3rd in class last year.
Just got done lookin at yer blog (again!) and am still just over what you've done to the green/black one. That oil cooler looks like its a fan-farging-tastic idea. Ditto with the aux tank. M
What did you do with your subframe to be able to mount those bags? There is no way the stock aluminum subframe could carry that load. On the stock bike, that rack bolts to the turn signal bracket and plastic fender. Mine sheared the bolts carrying nothing but a 10 pound tool bag. So what did you do to it?
