I just got a 660 and the only directions were the "Quick start up manual".
This doesn't give any info on how to get songs on the unit.
Does the music need to be on a SD card or does it load into some internal
    memory?

I would never dream of listening to music on the bike, but this is how to do it:

Look at your Nuvi in Mass Storage Mode, navigate to either the Garmin\media\music on the 660 or the SD card, in X:\Garmin\media\music and add your MP3 files there.

Note you can also add podcasts too if they're stored in MP3 format. We love to get the Friday Night Comedy podcasts from BBC and listen to those in the cage.

Actually the correct folder (directory) for your MP3 music files on your ZUMO is:

\Garmin\anything you want to call it\

I would strongly recommend using as large a microSD Card as you can afford. You will not get very many MP3 files into the zumo internal memory before running out of room. I recommend that you put all of your data only on the microSD Card and leave the internal storage for the zumo's use.

    Cheers,

The ZUMO 660 is much faster in how it Indexes your music and does not have to do a complete Index to your music every time you boot/turn it on like the zumo550 does. I have over 1500 tracks on mine and it takes less than a 50sec. to index when I rename the directory (worst case).

EDIT: Just noticed I had said 5sec and should have been 50sec.

    Thanks for the replies.
I'll go shopping for a large micro SD card.
I did try searching the Garmin site for a manual without success.
    I'll try the link provided.

Apparently the 660 will only handle a 8 GB card maximum

You don't have to search for Manuals on Garmin products. Just go to the product page and look at the right hand column -> Manuals

Hmmm, I've been quite pleased with my SanDisk 16GB microSD.

$800 for a GPS and they don't even provide a proper manual?

The 16GB Adata card works fine as well.

    Define "proper".

I can't begin to count the number of "dead tree" manuals I have which I can never find when I need them, so I'd rather have the "E" version which I can download if I can't find it locally, on my computer.

Of course you can't read the "E" version in the tub, but that's a minor setback.

Yes I would agree with you regarding the dead tree thing. So they do produce a manual, it is just an electronic version.

Yeah, the download page has tons of stuff you can get - perhaps that's why there's no printed manual. Can you imagine how many trees would be needed to print all of these?

All this discussion about the manual and the information is nowhere in there!

It does not tell you WHERE to put the MP3 files. - not \Garmin\media\ or ANY OTHER location.

I've tried \Garmin\media\music and it does not work!!! If I put the same files on the internal flash and it works fine. I REALLY would like to use the SD Card though!

Have you ever thought it might be your card that's defective or not compatible? If the file location is not normally an issue, and there's no special mention in the manual, maybe it's not usually a complicated thing, and your situation is abnormal for some reason.

    Just saying.

    MP3 files should go here:

    \Garmin\MP3\

You will get better indexing performance if you place your MP3's in multiple sub-folders.

If this does not work, Format your SD Card and try again.

Optimally your SD Card should have the following folders (directories):

    \Garmin\GPX
    \Garmin\JPG
    \Garmin\MP3
    \Garmin\POI
    \Garmin\userdata

I've seen some people posting 8gb max capacity of zumo 660, my works just fine with 16GB and also tried a 32GB and had no problems, The only thing is that they have to be converted to MP3 and perhaps volume adjusted with MP3Gain to have them all play equally and not having to adjust the volume every time since getting to the volume control it's a pain.
