Just noticed my headlight reflector is also melted (F650GS '11) and found this interesting discussion. Just also checked another F800GS ('12) parked at my workplace - its reflector has also melted. (All the other bikes parked around it had no problems, so its not my workplace causing this!) I know I am saying what's already been said, but we're definitely talking about a poor manufacturer's design. I think I'll be checking every GS I come across to get some solid statistics. My main concern for now is to pass my MOT test (UK vehicle safety test) in a week's time.
I will pm ya, as I am not really supposed to mention things for sale in this part of the forum. Stand by.
I got my headlight replaced by BMW Australia under goodwill, as it was out of the warranty period. I've updated my thread http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=25038172 Here's a pic of the shiny new headlight :-D
So far, nothing at 23,157 miles. <table><tr><td><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3882/15051495639_1ea071949c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_20140914_111234"></td> <td><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5558/15051570390_e04bf37dcb.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_20140914_111108"></td> </tr> <tr><td> <img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5568/15237876072_4e9e2b43f7.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_20140914_110941"></td> <td> <img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5577/15051520120_5622bee91c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_20140914_110929"></td> </tr> </table> This is a 2013 so I'm wondering if it's an issue with only specific years/models (e.g. the connector)
Hopefully a lot, CEV were the old headlights (you'll see CEV on the glass on the right hand side) & Hella make the new ones. I'm yet to see/hear of a Hella headlight melting
The different between them is the way the chrome reflector and the rear cap they used. The new Hella headlight 2014 The old CEV headlight 2008-2013 Look at the chrome reflector - the old has different line compare to the new one.
sons of biatches so the are aware of the problem like the alternator and it's not a recall... ffs did I expect anything else? nope.
Well criminy, it looks like I have the 2013 CEV one. Guess no help there. I'm still wondering if the connector could help. I know that the LED's put out plenty of heat and to avoid problems they'll tack on a large heat sink and even a fan.
After the replacement of an new headlight unit (still the same CEV model one). I'm had been using the cyclops LED , the heat is mostly at the back of the housing. As long the heat is not directly at the front where the reflector is. The reflector is safe from another melting or burnt. So far so good.
