The weather report had a chance of rain, but it never did. The overcast kept the temperature down. I ran out I-70 to Vera Rd Exit west of Topeka. [/IMG] I followed gravel roads south and west to the former town-site of Hessdale. Snokomo School [/IMG] Flint Hills Scenery [/IMG] [/IMG] Looking down into Hessdale [/IMG] [/IMG] From Hessdale I rode northwest to Alma and then west from Alma to Deep Creek Road. I followed Deep Creek Rd north of I-70. I past this one room school. [/IMG] And in the entrance a memorial appropriate for the day. [/IMG] I followed the Kansas River back east toward Topeka and finally viewed the river. [/IMG] Back to Topeka and onto the turnpike back home. It was a 270 mile ride with about 100 miles in gravel. I have driven I-70 through this area so many times, I couldn't tell you the number. In fact, I was out that way the day before this ride for a family gathering. That was the inspiration for this ride. I always wanted to know what was over the hill, but never took the time to look. I finally looked and it was great to do it on a bike. Phil
Check out this web site for Flint Hill Rides. http://www.backroadstouring.org/kansas/index2.htm There are rides going on all the time.
I have been to the site when I heard about Stampede. To bad it does not fit my schedule this year. Maybe next. I will keep my eye on it for upcoming rides. Phil
