A thread for the bikes we see on the road, and wonder.....? Who, what bike, where are they going? On saturday morning I followed a bike from Huntly to Horotui. A torquoise GS, a PD? Dunno the finer points of these Airheads. A Jafa all loaded up getting out of the big smoke for the weekend - but why was he on SH1 ? There are more fun ways to get to Hamilton, maybe he had to get to Boyds for a TKC80 before they shut? I needed to get to BNT to pick up a head gasket and waterpump for my daughter's Laser Lynx before they shut - but I didn't come back on SH1 !
wondered when someone would start this thread. i was enjoying a pot of tea at whakamaru about a week ago when these guys rocked up. carting a decent load too.
That would have been me ... ... but let's get something straight from the get-go. I'm most definitely NOT a jafa. Kiwiland's only Paki-Pakeha possibly, but jafa, definitely not ... Now that we've got that cleared up, yup it was an R100GS-PD, but not mine (my bike is a std GS bumble-bee, but that's in for a gearbox rebuild), and SH1 was most definitely not the original plan. I'd been working in South Auckland all week, and the bag was full of laptop, files, some other work related gubbins, and a weeks worth of laundry, so I was heading back to the 'tron to deal with the domestic stuff. As I say SH1 wasn't the original plan, but I'd already tried coming coming back down on SH22 on Friday evening on yet another GS-PD, but only got as far as Pukekawa before the clutch crapped out on me. So, after waiting for the owner of the turquoise GS to turn up with the recovery ute, driving to the mechanics place to drop off the buggered bike, strapping my crap onto the back of the turquoise GS and heading for my mates place, I didn't crawl into my pit until gone midnight. Therefore I really could not be arsed with anything more entertaining than SH1 on Saturday morning (also the owner of the bike is a "clean freak" and I didn't want to risk getting it dirty - my bike has a comparable "patina" to yours) ... explanation acceptable ... ... and obviously you're not too familiar with the new road layout at the top of the Express way after your little diversion ... so ya clear we got a great private retired BMW mechanic in Jaffaland we use. My bike had a gearbox leak which he fixed. Zebs bike had a slight noise in gearbox so he did a bike swap for my bike and is getting the bearings done as preventative maintenance along with some other mods. So he attempts to return to Hamilton via SH22 but after many kms and 21 years has no drive to the rear wheel just. Strange the bike always gets me home. Zeb rings me and I am 600kms away on the Picton ferry to give me the good news. One phone call and another PD owner goes to pick up Zeb and bike. After several hours the bike is back at mechanics dwelling. One end of Auckland to the other. The rescue team then gives Zeb his PD to return to the Tron as he has to many bikes in the garage to pick from. Zeb is then spotted by Motu. Now the good news is Zebs bike is nearly sorted and will pickup this week. I still have the other PD to use until mine is, but have just driven 6300km is 28 days around South Island on a family holiday along with many hours on my mountain bike so am in no rush to drive or ride.
Motu, ever get the feeling that you wish you'd never started this thread ... [edit] At the Hamilton night market a couple of weeks back, I spotted a well used R60/6 (I think), white with a tool compartment in the tank and delortho carbs rather than bings ... anybody ... [/edit] John
Uh oh, so you get a little twisty about being called a Jafa eh? Or just stressed out from BMW breakdowns? I do the Expressway everyday, it's just that doing the double islands is a shit load more fun than just taking the normal road...it's all about fun remember, riding a bike is time to destress. And no, I'm not sorry about starting this thread, as wairou said, it's about time. Just puzzled about the strange response.....
There's a bumper bargain deal PD on trademe at the moment. A positive steal at $9k ono ... :huh It's just down the road from me, and I'll gladly ride it down to Nelson for you if you want ... ... all in jest Motu, all in jest ... it certainly wasn't intended to come across as serious, or be an in-joke. Now, back to normal programming ...
been the subject of a captive breeding plan?? Haven't noticed hardly any for ages,, yet in the last couple weeks have seen 6 or 8!
Apologies in advance for being a Jaffa but " retired BMW mechanic in Auckland Hey Motu...don't mention ' the circlip" I suppose as good a airheads are the newest one is nearly 30 years old now.:huh cheap CS near me http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/classic-vintage/auction-838665480.htm
Both of mine went to Gary Wendt's funeral. Jeez there were a lot of old bikes and old riders there. It's such a shame that something tragic is required to bring the community together...
LT and Oscar - thanks for the mention of Gary and the footage of the bikes at the funeral. Was unable to get there, but, man, the riders included a lot of my old mates... (Not quite a threadjack....).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUEtnOwAX1g&feature=youtu.be heres another clip , bloody annoying though turn the volume down sounds like someone riding a R65 taped it.
I seem to be settling into my new vibration period, I was sitting on 5,000rpm on the expressway reeling in the PD (after I ''took the wrong turn'') and didn't even notice it. Did these BMW mechanics retire after making their fortune on repairs? I should've specialised in something boring, instead of wanting interest in my job.
I only met Gary thru the Classic Racing, he used to come over and chant to " Mr Toaster" as he called me, apparently he had names for everyone. He sure had an interesting life and a good send off.
