I've had the pleasure to hang out with and host georde_e http://advrider.com/forums/member.php?u=153293 from the UK for the last few days, this is his first trip to the US and he is now headed to Yellow Stone, then to Sturgis to meet up with RTW Doug. Sometime after that he will make his way to California to meet up with friends from Horizons. Right now he is in Dayville (near John Day) and is heading east on 26 to Ontario. From there he's not to sure of his route but would like to stay off of the Interstates with his loaded down TT650R. So if anyone has suggestion for him, please post up, and if he is unable to get wifi, I will call him up and give him the info. georde_e is a good bloke and he would appreciate any good advice for his travels. Thanks
I don't know the back roads in that area, but have been through there recently. Many visitors from overseas are interested in seeing Wild West history. Two places to see that lie along his path: The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming is a pretty cool museum. Deadwood, South Dakota is an interesting old town, with lots of saloons and so forth. I hope you enjoy your journey.
Point him at the Happy Trails Rally at Kamiah, Idaho. Look at the Boise Rider's thread for info. It's pretty easy to find, just head up hiway 95 to Grangeville, Id. and then turn right and go to hiway 12. Turn left and look for a bunch of bikes at a place called the Lewis and Clark Resort. Lottsa good rides, lottsa BS, and maybe even an adult beverage or two. I'm headed there myself right now. 4r
From Ontario, you can either: 1 - (Faster, more droning route) Head south on 78 toward Murphy. From there I would go through Mountain Home, then get on 20 and head across the state that way. It's a lot of farms and open space, but that would be a change from much of the UK. Plus you would go through the lava fields at Craters of the Moon. 2 - (Longer/slower mountain route) Cross the interstate to Payette, then go 52 to 55, North to Banks Lowman Rd, meet up with 21 and go to Stanley. Then 75 toward Challis. From there you can either start going back South to meet up with 20, or keep heading North-East to Salmon. I think I headed South there due to schedule, but that initial bit from 55 to 20 to Stanley has some fantastic scenery and some nice twisty sections. Here's something you would see on that route:
Thanks for the suggestions, I will point him to this thread when/if he gets wifi, or "ring him on the telly" with the info
My advice is not to hang out with Road Rash - Doh !!! too late Don't have any route advice - But wish him a safe and ADVenturous journey !!!
Hi All, Big Thanks to Road Rash, for being a fantastic host, I think I have put on a few pounds while being hosted. Had to get away though... I was enjoying myself so much I thought my visa would run out before I even left Oregon !!! Headed out and missed the 26 so ended up on the 30..... Went round the back of Mount Hood, Ran out of fuel ! (had spare on board). Then managed to pick up the 26 and stayed on that all the way. Camped in National Park. Totally loved it !!! Then last night stayed in Dayville camping RV ground. I am now in Ontario, treating myself to a motel and Wifi ! Thanks for all your suggestions, looks like I have a busy night researching. Cheers Geordie aka Will
Ah, the tourist mecca of Ontario, don't miss the combine wrecking yard. Oregon will still be here when you get back to California- just turn right. You could cross it a dozen times, and still find something new.
