That part is done by my machinist. I have asked to see some of his operations but he won't let me watch...
I'm one of the fortunate few who has worked with Steve and witnessed his work first hand. He is an absolute genius when it comes to these motors and he makes it seem so simple and straight forward: the mark of a true expert ! Count yourself lucky if you ever have the opportunity to 'speak' to him or experience his craft first hand. BTW, Thanks for the write up Steve
Between cleaning the garage and work on the engine, picture taking I was in the garage about 6 hours.
Steve, You are da' man. Any chance you'll be in the Ottawa, Ontario area soon? I am having some trouble with that XL600R build!!! Jeff
Steve this is a great write up. The trick I want to know is for the little snap ring that holds the center gear on the countershaft. I got it off with two flat blade screw drivers but is there a tool just for this type of ring? Looks like two reversed arrows on each end. John
I don't think I could afford you! Plus, I am having fun learning as I go. Hopefully, I can steal bits of your knowledge through these postings for free!!!!! I do promise that if I am ever in SF, steaks and beer are on me. Jeff
John, I just use the big snap ring pliers. The snap ring is still a pain to remove. Getting it back in place is easy. Just get it on the shaft and use the next gear to push it into place.
Thanks, very interesting to see the assembly procedures so I can better dream about rebuilding mine someday...
So what did you charge her for your time? $600 for parts alone sounds pretty good to me. My motor needs freshening up and I don't need the NX 2nd gear so... Excellent write up as always Steve.
