Ok, this is for my Boxer Cup but not sure exactly where to post. I'm looking to do a headlamp lighting upgrade on my 2004 Boxer Cup, both hi and low beams. I was thinking LED but was told that the bulb can be installed but will not get my back cover back on because of the fan on the back of LED bulb. So it sounds like HID is my only option. I'd like to hear from anyone who had successfully made this upgrade on their R1100S bikes. I would also like to get recommendations on which kits to use. I use only quality components on my bike so looking for high quality products. I would also like to replace my front and rear signal bulbs with HID for better visibility. Recommendations welcome.
I used HID lighting. It was fairly cheap kit and it has been working for 2 years now. I chose the light spectrum that is closest to the sun. Yes the light spreads all over but the sweet spot is fine and much brighter than factory incandescent - in the sweet spot. Benefit from the light spread is you are well seen. Never had any complaints from drivers when on low beam. Make sure low beam is not too bright. Mod took about 2 hours. Love it.. I chose high power for high beam. Awesome when off road at night. Power draw is less then incandescent. I have never heard of signal bulbs using HID. Takes some time for the light to get up to full intensity so wouldn't be pracicle. LED's for turn signals won't need a fan so no problem there.
You might want to try Dynamic Motorrad's LED replacements: http://dynamicmotorrad.com/ For HID lights, get in touch with Pirate's Lair and check out Jerry's recommendation: http://pirateslair.net/HID.htm He's a rider and checks out the merchandise he sells. I hope this helps. Mike
I'll bet you that you're probably going to modify your dust cap anyway... Definitely if you are going to do HID. If you are going HID, then I'd go with a Morimoto setup. http://www.theretrofitsource.com/ You can get them in a 4500 Kelvin color. If you are looking into LED, I would check out Cyclops... http://www.cyclopsadventuresports.com/ Call them and ask about getting the LED without the fan guard to see if it will fit under the dust cap. I modified my dust cap to make sure it would fit. Not a hard thing to do... There are several LED turn signal lights out there.... Weiser is one option... http://www.advdesigns.com/weiser.html Dynamic Motorrad is another... Have fun... Sent from my Samsung Note 3
I run DDM Tuning kits in two GSs and an 08 Jeep Wrangler. The GSs only have HIDs in the low beams because they are separate bulbs. The Jeep has a HI/LO kit. I got the kit for my Jeep about 3 years ago. One ballast went bad and it was replaced with no issue. The life time warranty is great I have order new bulbs because I didn't like the 5k color when driving in the rain and snow. That shouldn't be an issue on your bike. I love the DDM Tuning product. Yes its made in China but so is the rest of this crap. The only issue I have had is sometimes I get a little 'wobble' in my Jeeps high beam. The Hi/Lo bulbs move the bulbs up and down to simulate the location of the High beam filament. This sounds dumb but works well. Some times my one of my high beams will not 'lock' up and it gets a little wobble. I kind of like it because it really gets the attention of people I flash. I have been told its a Jeep issue (and yes there are lots of Jeep electrical issues) and it and it can be fixed by adding a resistor. I don't care enough to do that. Also keep in mind that a Hi/Lo kit will come with a wiring harness and relay. You'll need to have room to stash those some where in your bike. This is on top of the two ballasts you'll need. http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DDM-HID-Kit-Slim-Ballast-35W-or-55W
Great big thanks to everyone! I checked out all links. Dynamic Motorrad looks very cool but at the higher end of the spectrum. I will keep them in mind for LED signal bulbs. Reached out Pirats lair regarding my application. Also will reach out to Cyclops.
My high beam is H7 55w and low beam is H1 55w. Pirates Lair is looking into the options but they admit that they are not too familiar with R1100S. Will explore other links little more thoroughly.
Which led bulbs do ypu have in mind?? And how much more so the stick out?? With help from others on this forum i could 3d print some bigger caps or some extension collars for the caps. Right now i am running 100W hid on the low beam. Lights up nicely. Does not disturb oncomming traffic and i have not melted anything yet. I intend on doing the highbeam at some point aswell.
I don't have anything particular in mind and researching my options. I sent a few emails yesterday. I'm sort of leaning towards Cyclops H7 3000 lumens bulb - excellent reviews and appears to be a quality product. Theirs is 30w but at 5700 k it should emit a color that's very close to BMW's original HID. Are you running yours in a r1100s?
1200gs. Are the caps different?? Some one had done a led mod on a 1100gs. Green something was the guys name. They used a standard truck led (complete with housing) and did a couple of other parts to install on the 1100. My setup: post no 873 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288538&page=4
CopperGreen does the mount for a Truck Lite LED. Not sure that it will fit on the S Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cool... This is my adaptation of the LED into the low beam side on my 1200.. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=948701&page=148 Edit: Or try this link: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=26551574 I ride two up so I had to modify the dust cap because I have to adjust the Headlight assembly back - considerably... To compensate for the additional weight... What I've got now - maybe a little much - but it definitely works... Sent from my Samsung Note 3
Awesome setup. It even has its own air filter! So what would be better a collar extension or just a cap with more volume?
Right now I would lean more to a whole new cap with more volume. Something that comes straight out similar to the cap I put on... That way it would be a 'plug and play' option. Just transpose the original rubber gasket... What got me was the fan guard for that LED Light Assembly was just touching that curved - in portion of the original dust cap. So I took the dremel tool and cut off that curved portion and glued the cap on - plenty of room now... Plus it gives plenty of options where to put in a filtered vent... And enough room to run wires if needed through a grommet... Sent from my Samsung Note 3
Making it not curved - and a little more room - maybe 25 mm up from the base and then straight across something like: If you have to curve it to make the dome part of the cap then 20 mm of the straight wall should be good.. then make the dome. That's probably overkill... but it should work. Personally I like the straight wall design because I can almost grab anywhere and turn it - instead of finding those little nubs... and it's really in a tight space to begin with... where my hands have a hard time being in there anyway. 3-D printers are amazing - the stuff I hear that you can make from them is just astounding... I heard someone made an actual working jet engine... and I also heard that doctors are considering this for making 'replaceable organs' in the future - using organic material... wow... it seems to be only limited by the material used... You know - I would get ahold of Darryl at CyclopsAdventureSports if you want to pursue this as an opertunity... you never know... maybe you two could back each other up and make a little on the side... I'm sure he has gotten feedback to what fits and what doesn't.
That would be good. And on the plus side there will be no international shipping in %90 of the world. We are kind of a community. So instead of me sending it from Turkey i can have some one in the usa print it and send it. I believe we have hijacked the OPs thread in a rather serious way. Back to topic. How would you compare the led vs a 100w hid??
Edit: The 3000 lumen LED is brighter than the stock bulb, close to the 3200 lumen 50 Watt HID setup I had with the Morimoto setup... Although not as quite as bright. The color is 'whiter' than what I had (5700 Kelvin compared to 4500 Kelvin I had with the HID), and I prefer the lower Kelvin value... Just as an anti-glare point of view... That said, the LED is an instant on type of bulb, the HID system will take up to 15 seconds or longer to reach full brightness. I'm happy with it. The LED seems to have a slight focus right in the middle of the low beam, which suits me just fine. It got kind of interesting getting to fit the driver inside of that Headlight assembly... You'll have to play with it for awhile to get everything to fit. It might very well be more interesting working on the high beam side... Maybe questionable if everything will fit - don't know - I haven't done that side just yet... Anyway - no regrets so far. I already had 3+ plus years on the HID setup - and I want to be pro-active on replacing Headlight bulbs - which never go out at the right time... Sent from my Samsung Note 3
