Stage 1 half completed.. The rear section of the sub frame.. I'm going to build another leaner..The XR unit worked so well I diddn't really concider a ridged/fixed unit..Its abillity to move over bumbs with very little efect on the bike is a big plus also no leading link is required as you are not steering the bike but still leaning... Other than the two 3/4" rod ends as the main pivits there will be a slideing limiting strut to restrict the bikes lean.. there will be a triangle frame welded off the spreader bar on the rear going to the front engine mount plates..I'm hopeing being a triangle it will transfur the ridgillity from the rear section to the front to reduce/stop any side ways flex as the XT660s don't have a bottom cradle frame.. The rear frame bolts to the foot peg bolts on each side & to the main stand mount... Not figgered out this pic posting thing yet.... Another bit to the puzzle... swing arm tacked togeather.. had to use the arc welder as the argon bottle is empty so couldn't tig it... I'm going to tack all parts up to the final fit up that way it's easyer to make changes.. The arm has a 3:1 ratio to the shock & will pivot on bronze bushes... Main arm is built from 32mm OD x 3mm stainless with 16mm OD X 3mm braceing... I hope the 3/4" axle is stong enough.. 3/4" berring were the biggest that will fit the wheel... would have liked a 25mm or 1" axle but would need to fined a new 17" wheel .... Now back onto the bikes sub frame... I have had a bit of time to think about it some more.. being a leaning car..it only held on by 2 bolts.. so the sub-frame will have the bash plate bolted to it as well it will have engine bars as a intergrated part.. that will give me the option to remove the car and use the bike as normal..On my XR250 leaning car it takes about 30mins to remove or replace the car... Got the sub frame out of the way.... now I can bet it on start on the car that now I have some fixed point to measure from... I hopeing the frame will add some ridgility to the bike as theres no bottom cradle on the XT660 frame.. For the car my thinking /design is a little diffrent... As the line pic shows... easyer to draw quick pic than try and decribe it in text.. Seat/rear guard will be from a WR.. to try in keeping with the colour/style of the XT... Swing arm/linkage/shock are from a Chinese Shineray 200 as I already have them laying around... I was following your wheel track thread . From looking at it from a leaner view I couldn't see how the narrow track would adversely impact the handling . Having never built/ridden a leaner I kept my opinion to myself . Cool to see you are trying a variation on your other one . I would prefer the first one for personal use ... but that's just me Have fun . . .
Apart from getting the right length bolts the sub frame is on... I got a bit of weld pull in the final welding off the bike... I thought that was a possability so I made it to have 15mm spacers in the front mount..so now the spacers will be 5mm longer on one side to get it on with out any stress.. now I can start on the car.... I like the looks of that subframe you built, I never thought of a leaner when I started to look at hacks but for off road it seems that it may be better than a solid mounted rig. Is there any advantage or disadvantage for having a hack on the left or right side of a bike for off road other than just being built for what country you ride in if on the left or right side of the road. I see both of your builds have the hack on the left side so Im assuming that "NZ"stands for New Zealand and that is where you live?
We drive on the left here... it would be so much easyer to put the leanner on right as the rear arm wouldn't need to clear the chain...
Ok.... Made a start on the car... Got the linkage set up to give 125mm (5") wheel travel I can get another 25mm (1") by moveing the frame mount up..But then I can't get the bolt though might have to look at a bolt on linkage mount.... The up rights that the seat sits on have to be shortened yet.. I will play with the linkage 2 morrow..can't do any more to the frame till I get more tube... PS..I hate that crappy gassless wire... G`Day My R100RS I made the front pivot 82mm higher on my leaner so when you lean it actually steers the sidecar which ever way you lean. Max
