Against my better judgement I let my Montana upgrade itself to the new firmware (I think it was 5.9). Several things got messed around with in the unit. This one particular, when I start up Basecamp with Montana plugged in and ready I get an error message. It says that "Error Reading Garmin/GPX/Waypoints.gpx" I grabbed the file from the unit and tried to open it in Mapsource. It will not do it either. Can I just delete the Waypoint.Gpx file and the unit will recreate it next time I put some waypoints on it? Also I noticed alot of GPX files in the same folder on the Montana. What are all those GPX files in there. Most look to be trackings.
There's no reason to fear 5.9. I ran it and it worked well for me until I got 6.00 as a beta. Yes, delete the waypoints file. But if you run Javawa Device Manager on the GPS first, it might tell you why the file is defective.
Thanks, I deleted it and error message went away. Now another question and I can't remember where I got this from but: I have the Dashboard visible while viewing the Map. On the Dashboard was Track On, Track Off and Mark Waypoint. Before my 5.9 update, if I selected Track On the button it would stay pressed downed indicating you were tracking until you selected Track Off. Cannot remember how I got that Shortcut setup to do that?
I found the post that I got the Track On and Track Off info from. But the information is missing.......Any idea where it went. See this post: http://advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20174914&postcount=6123
This is something else that seems to have changed with my upgrade to 5.9 To save a track I go into TRACK MANAGER, Select CURRENT TRACK, Select SAVE TRACK. At the end of that it use to come up and ask before the upgrade, Clear the Current Track? Now it comes up and ask Clear the Current Track and Associated Trip Data. I don't want the Trip Computer to Clear. I do want the Track to Clear. So do I need to answer CANCEL and go back to the Track Manager Menu and select CLEAR CURRENT TRACK?
Why do you need to save the track manually anyway? Why not set tracks to archive daily in Setup/Tracks? I set mine up that way, and created two shortcuts, one to clear track, and another to clear trip data and track, and do either as appropriate.
Might be just the way I think. I use my Montana at work mapping trails at work. My flow is like this. Get to trail that I want to track. TURN ON TRACKING Get to end of trail I am tracking. TURN OFF TRACKING, SAVE TRACK, CLEAR TRACK, SHOW ON MAP Get to new trail. TURN ON TRACKING Get to end of that trail. TURN OFF TRACKING, SAVE TRACK, CLEAR TRACK, SHOW ON MAP you get the idea...... When I get to my computer at end of day, hook up and can view my Saved Tracks. I then can transfer them to Basecamp , rename, change color, view length of track, etc......I want my Trip Computer to stay untouched until I manually reset it myself. What I am trying to accomplish is to have some control over my tracks while out in the field. Garmin's default of Not Show on Map for a track causes me an extra step. If a person is going to copy/move a track to the Montana from Basecamp then the default should be SHOW ON MAP. Common sense says if you are putting a track onto your Montana then you will most likely want to have it show up on your map not Hide on Map.
After playing around with my mind today and doing some real time testing I think I have figured out a good workflow on the Montana. These are my settings and configuration: I have three shortcuts. TRACK ON, TRACK OFF, CLEAR TRACK these are all in my favorites and displayed while on the map. TRACK ON Shortcut Settings that I changed Under Tracks Section I selected RECORD, SHOW ON MAP Under Reset Section I selected CLEAR CURRENT TRACK TRACK OFF Shortcut Settings that I changed Under Tracks Section I selected DO NOT RECORD In the Application Box I have Track Manager. That way when I hit TRACK OFF it stops the Tracking and Launches Track Manager. In Track Manager I select CURRENT TRACK then SAVE TRACK but at the completion of SAVE TRACK I do not clear anything I just cancel. That is accomplished when I select TRACK ON since I have the CLEAR CURRENT TRACK setting in that shortcut. CLEAR CURRENT TRACK I have this in my favorites. I can use it whenever. But the real reason I have it is when I am finished riding and mapping trails for the day and after I select the final TRACK OFF and save that final track I have a seperate CLEAR CURRENT TRACK to finish the day out and clean things up but still keep my Odometer Settings going. I cannot figure why in Version 5.9 the changed the way CURRENT TRACK, SAVE TRACK works by asking if you want to Clear the Track Data and Trip Data. Why did they combine that? Just thought I would post what I have setup so that others may benefit from this information. I wish there was more detail info from Garmin as to what really is happening when we select something within the GPSr. Details are always good.
I love Shortcuts. They're almost as useful as batch files. I have my reset shortcuts available as the Favourites I get on a single Power Button press. That way I can run the Nuvi dashboard, yet still have easy access to those Shortcuts. Sent using strings and tin cans and Tapatalk.
Wondering if anyone else is seeing a problem in Track Manager where after you select a track the buttons (ie, Show on Map, View Map, etc) do NOT work? Seems to occur on random tracks, if I fuss long enough going back and forth between track manager and the track the buttons will un-freeze and start to work again. Everything works normal again, until random time. Could be same track or different track, seemly very random. I do not recall this issue until 3 or 4 firmware updates ago.
It can sometimes take a fair number of seconds (as much as 20 or 30) for the track to load, if it's a large one. You won't have access until the track is completely loaded.
could be a delay of some sort due to gross number of points across all tracks. I do like a lot of points last track with temporary button freeze had 5500 points, whereas other much larger tracks (~11k) had no button freeze. Perhaps related to processing sequence across all tracks in Track Manager.
Well, this sucks. I just got back Saturday from a great 3200 mile ride basically following Cannonshot's Lake Superior Circle Tour. My Montana performed flawlessly and after the ride I deleted all of his many, many waypoints. Before I left I did have to add some map 'units' or sections (whatever is the proper term?) for Canada, MN, etc. Going on a driving trip to NY Friday, so I made some routes/tracks/waypoints and tried to send to the Montana and I get a message saying; "routes sent to Montana 600 were recalculated because they were created on a map that is not installed on that device." Looks like they transferred but they don't show on my Montana. I've been using my CN 2012 which was updated once for free. I also just updated both the Montana and BC to the latest versions. Any fixes???
