Tonight we started fabricating a subframe to mount a sidecar to my brother's KLR.

I moved the footpegs back and down while I was at it

We have a bit more to do, but made a pretty good start

While I was welding, Andy got the opportunity to learn how to clean the airfilter on a KLR. Actually, he cleaned the filters on three of my bikes-thanx, bro' !

yes, I made the red hack. Andy bought a bitsa from another ADVrider, a Velorex tub on a Spirit chassis, if I remember right. This is his hack:

We plan to weld steel diamond plate to the chassis to form a platform, which will do double duty as a floor and ballast. I will probably fab up a similar brushgaurd and seat which we can bolt to the sidecar chassis for off road play and switch to the Velorex tub for commuting and hauling the kid.

Vern and I (mostly Vern) worked more on my subframe tonight. It's looking great and I can't wait to get it on the road!

By the end of the evening most of the subframe was completed - a few more pieces to go, then the diamondplate - - - soon, very soon!

Hey Claude, did you notice the moto rim on the table next to the tube bender? It's off my Norton. I am told no metal shop is complete without an English wheel but for the life of me, I don't know what it is good for...:rofl

I hear ya Vernon. We have a couple of those 'english wheels' arouind here too. Someday maybe we'll figure out how to use them.
Our tubing bender is kinda special as it does not need dies...see below.

Actually we have been using one of these for years:

horizontal operation! any length pipe and predictable, repeatable bends! I am green with envy!

beats the hell out of trying to match a chalk outline on the driveway and torch and treefork to bend it back when I've gone too far!

    Cool thread! Thanks!

    I have a question -

Where do you get your hardware from? Specificially the clevis/turnbuckle stuff. I assume it's standard thread, rather than metric, yeah?

I am using stuff I have laying around the shop. most of it came from Dauntless. The top rear strut mount is a clamp which I modified by welding the threaded block to the subframe. This will both prevent the clamp from moving and re-enforce the rear frame loop, which is notoriously weak on KLR's

I don't recall if I got the threaded boss for the top front strut mount from Dauntless or a local machinist but the the strut eyes, bottom clevis and clamp all came frome Dauntless and are also available from a number of other sidecar builders.

The struts themselves will likely be old Ural or Sputnik struts which I will lengthen to fit as needed.

The sidecar chassis came with two big clamps around the chassis rail which we will modify to accept heim joints I sourced from the local NAPA auto parts store. I plan to make them the same length and use the threaded heim joints to adjust toe-in, rotating the clamps to adjust the sidecar attitude and keep it level when I set the lean out.
