Howdy, Just moved to Reno after 15 years in China, must say that I'm enjoying the fresh air and mild winter. Picked up this beauty last night... Now I need to figure out the road registration thing and where all the good trails are. According to Nevada DMV, I need to add turn signals, horn, brake light, etc. Then I need to take the bike to a Nevada Licensed Motorcycle Dealer or Nevada Registered Motorcycle Repair Shop to sign off on the VP-254 form. Who would you folks recommend, and what's the fee for that? Does anyone have a crappy (or nice) set of DOT approved 80/100-21 & 100/100-18 tires I can borrow for a day? Apparently you can't get a shop to sign off on the VP-254 without DOT rubber, so I was going to get it inspected, registered and then put normal dirt tires back on it. Seems a shame to waste the money on a new set of dual sport tires just to get it registered. Feel free to share any intel on the moto scene in Reno, what should I know Cheers!
Welcome to town, not sure on adding the link here, but it should be on the next page here. Reno Tahoe area group.
BajaDesigns bolt on kit. Dealer who does inspection should loan you pull off tires. DualSportWest.com for photos of area
Welcome dude. Check out the other thread on Reno riders like fletch suggested, that will answer a ton of your questions. Hit me up to ride any Sunday.
I have had two bikes inspected by Mark at Nevda Motorcycle specialties. They are a KTM dealer, but he does street legal kits on other bikes all the time. NV. is a stickler for the stupid little stuff like horn and DOT tires. You have to have it all or Mark can't sign-off on it. I want to say I paid $50 to have a bike inspected last year.
I have some D606 take-offs, however, they are 90-90-21 and 120-90-18. They will work on your WR. Up to you, more than welcome to use them for inspection.
NMS is good to do the inspection, I paid them $20. Funny thing is nothing but the tires are DOT inspected but NV requires front and rear brake light switches and 2 mirrors. Welcome to NV, check out the Reno thread to hook up with guys on rides, there's usually someone riding every weekend.
It's been a crazy busy week and I'm finally getting around to saying thanks for all the advice and the warm welcome! Looking forward to riding soon. After a bit of research and fussing about, heres what Im going to do to the WR. First, let me say that I like the Baja Designs and Tusk kits, but I think they fall short for the following reasons. Baja - $459.95 Thats a lot of money. Its a very nice kit, but its overkill for me and doesnt include everything you need to be legal in NV. Tusk - $169.95 ~ $189.95 Better price, but doesnt include everything you need to be legal in NV without additional parts. So heres my shopping list, which is mostly the stuff you will find in the Tusk enduro kit with some improvements and substitutions. #1 Part#1274940001 Tusk Enduro Lighting Kit Replacement Wire Harness $29.99 #2 Part#1274960001 Tusk L.E.D. Flasher Relay $14.99 #3 Part#1274950001 Tusk Compact Control Switch $29.99 #4 Part#1275590001 Tusk Hydraulic Brake Switch $13.99 each X 2 (Tusk kit only has 1, NV requires 2) $27.98 #5 Part#1274920001 Tusk Universal On/Off Switch $9.99 #6 Part#1277800001 Tusk D-Flex Handguards with Turn Signals (these are better than the ones in the Tusk kit) $68.99 #7 1 Horn (from China, same as Tusk) $3.85 #8 1 Pair Mirrors (from China, same as Tusk, pair is cheaper than tusk single and NV requires 2) $3.90 #9 1 Pair DOT Rear Turn Signals (from Taiwan, same as Tusk) $9.25 #10 Some wire and solder to connect the existing tail light which is already dual filament and should work with the Tusk harness. #11 Some miscellaneous screws and aluminum to make a license plate bracket I think that should do it, with the exception of the reflectors, where did you mount them and is anyone using tape? I get mixed stories about the reflectors needing to go on the front and rear and which direction they should face. All up so far, about $200 Cheers!
+1 on Reno KTM for the dot conversion. DMV knows them well and any work they do sails right through. And welcome, the riding is sorta epic around here. Bike nights on Wednesdays at PJ&co. Should be starting up again next week IIRC.
Just wanted to post a final update on this thread for future inmate reference. The Tusk parts and other bits I ordered were perfect. I think I made the right choice by not ordering the Tusk or Baja kits. You will not get what you need from either manufacturer for complete compliance in Nevada. Stuff you want to pay attention to. You need left and right rear view mirrors. You need front and rear hydraulic brake switches. You need left and right orange/yellow reflectors on the front of the bike. You need left and right red reflectors on the back of the bike. You need DOT approved tires to pass the inspection. Reno KTM & Reno Motorsports are both fine establishments with helpful staff. One thing I like about Reno Motorsports is that they do the DOT conversion inspection for free I breezed through the inspection at DMV, everyone should pay attention to the fact that Reno DMV has a new mobile phone texting feature that lets you avoid waiting. In the last couple weeks I've registered a car and two motorcycles, total wait time has been less than 30 seconds. Look forward to seeing you guys on the trails or over in the local riding thread. Cheers!
