Nevgriff64 new toy, an Aussie built Ural+BMW 1150GS

Here is the begining of mating a BMWR1150GS to a Ural sidecar, Aussie style.

Proud owner is nevgriff64, celebrant Phil Duffy aka Phyllis.

As with all good relationships, you need to have a strong foundation for the union to survive the rocky road ahead.

May I present the subframe.



To which the Ural chassis will be attached to the subframe by these soon to be sloted clamps












RHS, note that even with a bash plate fitted there will be no loss of ground clearance

Was over there myself today and Phyllis sure does some nice work.

As well as Phyllis doing the hard and technical stuff, the body has been undergoing a few repairs. I've got all the pics and I'll leave the main story to Nev.

This was the body when Nev took delivery. Repairs already started but you can still see one of the bigger bits of damage.




There were a few dents all around it and it was a case of just working through it.

Hi Chris,Phil and Nev, this is going to be great Looks like a lot of work but I sure it will be worth it, Are you going to fit Leading Links? Are the wheels remaing std? I'll be keeping a close eye on this build, cos if I can't find a good Tiger 900 when I am ready to build my adventure outfit then I going to look for an adventure 1150 GS (yeah yeah I know I had GS) All the best guys to those involved.

The main dent in the nose wasn't easy to repair as the shape was distorted along the corner of the nose, and that russian steel is fairly thick and must be treated differently to the stuff we use here. It's quite hard and doesn't reshape well

The front mudguard needed some attention too

Thanks Chris for starting this thread mate.. Have had a couple of gentle hints that maybe I should get something started but being the usual slack bugger that I am, just hadn`t got around to it as yet..

Very happy with the way its all coming along and can`t thank Clancy enough for all the time and hard work in getting the Ural repaired and ready for the painting stages.. I`m sure he has a few more photos to come of some other very nice items that he built but i`ll leave them to him to post and explain how he made them..

Headed over to Phyllis`s house today to see how things were progressing and also to pinch a panel off the BMW to colour match for the painter.. Was delighted with how the build is progressing and must also say that the quality of work thus far has well and truly exceeded my expectations.. Thank you Phil, keep up the great work..

The panel was dropped off to the painter to colour match and after speaking to him for a short time, we realised that it wasn`t the genuine BMW paint work.. I knew the BM was first registered as black but one of the owners had decided he liked the silver a bit better.. What this now means is that not only will we be painting the Ural body and guard, we will also be painting the BMW panels at the same time.. We think a nice metalic colour would work nicely but what colour do we go with??

I have a few days before I need to make a decision so any input here would be greatly appreciated..

I`m kind of thinking a nice Orange colour very similar to the KTM bikes would look brilliant.. Maybe even KTM blue to match the 950 Adventure??

Have a careful look at the first pic and you'll see some funny little clip jiggers welded to the body around the front of the cockpit area. They're for holding a tonneau cover on , we think , and Nev wants to replace them with press studs. So we had to drill out the spot welds, refinish the panels and get rid of all the traces.



There were seven or eight of them altogether, top and both sides.

He's a hard boss, so I had to make a couple of other bits while I was trying to get a day off for good behaviour















More tomorrow.

As you'll see a little later, Nev's not going to use the standard Ural screen. I don't even think one came with it when he bought it. So we came up with another idea.

Accommodation would be cheap Claude, any number of us would put you up for free.

Well they are the start of this.



When we were first talking about doing this, Nev said he wanted some luggage racks on the body. He brought some pics that he had downloaded and the following was what we came up with.






















A little bit of a clean up and the front one was ready for the powder coaters.




Then the one for the rear

After the racks were done we had to have a look at mounting a screen. Eventually came up with the following and Nev's going to get a custom screen made once the whole thing is assembled.

Nev, dont you dare paint it any Fucking KTM colour:eek1

Your idea re message is the way to go.

I like the XJR1300 that Phil is doing. Usually the Suzuki 1400 gets the nod.
