I noticed that when my gas light comes on now, and I go to fill up, I only end up putting about 3 gallons in it. What gives? Did I mess something up when I took off the right tank perhaps?
Sounds like your other Tank (Right Side) is NOT Connected/PetCock Turned Off or Blocked Fuel Line(s).
can you see fuel when you open the cap? it does sound like your only using 1 tank, I have seen this before
I ran mine (2010) out of gas last week, leaned it over to the left, and got enough gas to get me to the station about a mile away. When I topped it off, I had almost 5 gallons exactly. I thought it had at least 5.5. Oh well. EDIT: I just looked it up. Apparently there's 5.15 gallons.
While it's still laying on it's left side, close the right side fuel tap so the fuel stays in the left tank when you lift the bike back up :)
I have not noticed. I usually have a hard time seeing it in there as the pump is usually under a lot of shade and I ride a lot at dusk. So you think I may have turned the right side valve off then?
Either right side or left side. The cross over hose has a valve on both ends and both must be open for the fuel to flow. Dave
If you took the right tank off without closing the fuel valve, you would have made quite a mess! If both left and right fuel valves are open, then double-check your vent hoses. A pinched hose won't allow the fuel to flow from the tank properly.
BaronVonDarrin, No worries. The valves have a right hand thread. Problem is you need to stand on your head for the turning direction to make any sense as the valves are upside down. If you look closely at the valve when you turn it, it moves out just like removing a bolt when opening. The valves don't take much force to turn so don't get crazy with effort. If unsure where you are try both directions and you will see the valve knob go in and out slightly when turned. Out is open. Cheers
A right hand threaded bolt, hole, valve, etc.. is still right hand threaded if viewed (or operated) upside down, isn't it?:)) So the directions won't change.. So clockvise turning will shut off the valves (even if you're on your head) Just imagine, if the valves were not installed upside down.. it would still work the same way (upside down installation is only a 180 degree rotation) And the thread doesn't care if the "world" is rotated, or your hand:)
I ran out of fuel over the weekend in the middle of no where! Light came on and went 0.2 and blahhhhh. Dead. Leaned the bike over on the left side let it lay there for a few minutes, picked it ip and fired it up. It got me about three miles to a gas station. Filled up with 5.2 gal. I think I'm going to drain the tanks and fill with a measured amount of fuel until filled. I think every bike has different size tanks! Looks like no one in the forum carriers the same amount in their tanks. Turning gas stops left is open by the way.
How much gas you get into those tanks is related to how you fill up. I personally fill up on the center stand. Fill the tank closest to the pump, then fill the other tank, then return to top off the first tank. The first tank will always drop some as fuel balances over. I then fill up my Aux tank last. It has a check valve. The main tanks have to be filled first. It is best to fill up on the way out on a ride. Need to ride about 50 miles before it is safe to to side stand the bike without risk of fuel overflowing the left tank. If I fill before getting home I will center stand my bike in the garage.
next time this happens remember how much gas you put in each tank.. put the bike on the center stand.. fill left tank... look at gas pump .. then fill right. I don't think either tank will take a full 3 gallons so I think your problem is something else.. My left tank takes about 2.5 gallons my right tank a little more because the fuel pump is in the left tank.. Let us know..
Ok, this weekend my low fuel light came on at about 135 mile mark. I ran the counter for 9 miles, the bike ran out of fuel and I coasted in the the gas station. The bike only took 4 gallons so that means I have at least another gallon. Fuel was gone from both tanks so I dont think there is a pinched hose or the petcock is off or there would still be fuel , or at least a good portion left on one side. What gives?? 9 miles is not going to get it.
I learned that last night, but I figured out why it happened really quickly. made my shorts stink of gas.
i opened the petcock as far to the left as it would go. hopefully that fixes it. I didnt see any kink in the line. wont know till I get my right brake sorted out from doing this high fender crap...
