NWR: feel free to post a piccie of the Sammie truck in this topic. I even was an International contributor to Izook @ Halflive: you bring the "stroopwafels"? kind of sirupwaffles
I love it especially the VEB sticker ! shame they don't make a UK sided version. The styling would look great on an similar patina ES250 !
I found a new unused VEB-plate into which I can put the number. The "1" is the last number of the year it was built and since the "EnergieKombinat" ( the big sticker on the front ) was split up in 1979 ( CLICK ) it is at least 40 years old ( 1971 ) but maybe I can track the year it was built by the chassisnumber. Incredible that it's not rotted through, all the nuts and bolts came loose without a problem
Spent a couple of hours sanding down the inside and then my wife painted the inside with dark blue Hamerite ( She used to be a painter ), very nice color Ammobox with 2-strokeoil, sparkplug etc: I bolted the DDR-sign over the holes of the original taillight: I ordered a new taillight, the same as the one of the tug. I can put it right above the DDR-sign, at the same height as the one on the tug. Think it will look neat. Adapted the steeringdampenerbar: Took it for a spin............... man is that tub light :eek1:eek1:eek1 Had my hackwheel in the air on every right turn, spilling precious gasoline over the tank ( and my crotch :huh ) so took it back home and bolted in my heavy little helper: the bar of lead I made for the transportplatform ( I melted old lead into a checkerplatebox, about 30 kilo's ): Waaaaaay better. Now I can take right turns and decide when I want to fly the "chair"
Been busy yesterday and today, working on a lid for the tub. Worked out very well I think Inspired by these pics I set to work Maskingtape in the edge for protection of the paint, trying out how to bend the corners with angled aluminum strip ( what's that called in English ?? ) Made the entire rim Clamped the -very wobbly- strip to a large piece of diamond/checkerplate and marked the size to be cut out: Testfitting lid and hinges: Poprivetted the rim to the lid, made spacers for the hinges and made a rack from scrap on the lid : Knob for a grip and 2 locks for shutting the lid ( locks are for fastening a hardtop to a Suzuki Vitara or Tracker as it's called on the other side of the ocean ) Large eyes for strapping stuff to the rack and reinforced the hinges: Done for today
Very nice : . Can I ... umm ... borrow your wife ... my sidecar needs painting and I'm VERY impressed with her work . Have fun . .
You pay the ticket, I send the wife Forgot I also changed the mount for the steeringdamper because I could not get my big boot easily inbetween sidecar/bike and mounts. I chopped the excisting mount ( which I already altered the week before :huh ) and took the top mount for the damper from the bottom tree to the frontforkleg. From to And from: to On the forkleg it's on the topbolt for the breakcalliper. Both side on Heim-joints. The bolt on the bottom is not bent, something went wrong when welding the bolt Steeringdamper is on wrong way arouind in the pics, already changed that ( was the first job this Sunday, had it fixed before 9.00 am )
Thanks, now waiting for my rear/brakelight, sidelight and indicators from Germany ( www.mzsimson.de ) Gunter Six is a very helpful guy !!
Lights came in the mail on Thursday so I started on them that same evening. I had to make small holes to mount the taillight ( at the same height as the taillight on the bike ) but for the indicator I had to make 50 mm hole :eek1 Same at the front, there already was a hole for the white light but no hole for the indicator so there I went again, making another big hole in the sheetmetal :eek1 All worked out very well luckily, wired it all up and it's all working Also put the widebeam light on the lower bracket between bike and tub. Now waiting for the paint on the spacers for the hinges to dry so I can finish working on the lid ( which now has a neoprene band on the inside for waterproofing ). DDR plate is over the holes for the original taillight
Lid's ready, hinges, lock and all. Going for a ride this sunny afternoon to see wether it makes a lot of noise. Without the lid there was quite some resonance, maybe I have to stick some Dynamat to the inside. Been working on the Beemer as well. Bought a fibreglass Hienrich lookalike ( brand unknown ) Had to make a bracket for the rear where it now rests on the original rubbers ( fibreglassed it into the tunnel ) and change the front bracket that came with the tank ( it's for an older type of BMW ). Coils could be placed in the tunnel on top of the framerail Had to change the rear upperbracket again and have the seat changed to fit the bigger tank, will be back somewhere this week. Got a call 2 days ago that the tank was ready, filled and painted: So i put it on the bike today to see how it looks now............ ............... I LOVE IT Now I can pohotoshop kneepads and striping to see what it will look like. I think I'll have the kneepads painted on instead of sticking homemade pieces of rubber on it. Been looking at John's Beemer garage on the "Tanks"page for inspiration: CLICK Had to take some sheetmetal out of the ears for the headlight ( of course this was the trailversion, they now look decent, with straight edges and neat corners ):
Went to a meeting last Sunday with over 700 bikes, mine was the only one not washed and polished Had a blast with that little MZ working so hard for me, always makes me think of this childrensbook Arriving: I loaded two chairs in the tub and we "picknicked" next to the bike ( my mate was on his Enfield, we were amongst R1's and Z 750/Z100's ) Kicking it back to life: Never forget your cigar: Do you gays have that same experience. You drive your bike like the 27 year old you used to be and wonder who that greybearded old guy is in the pics ( or carwindow of the car next to you at the trafficlights ) ? Leaving ( and yes I know I'm too big for this bike but I dont care, it stole my heart )
Got the seat back, it's been altered to fit the new big tank. Fits perfect, nicely snug inside the high tunnel. "Kneepads" are black pieces of paper I cut as a mockup for the shape. I think this will be how they will be. Tank needs pinstriping of course, will be similar to this: Pic borrowed from John's Beemer Garage In black of course I think I'll go without the sidecovers, they are too square right next to the rounded shape of the big tank. Battery wil be black ( thin sheets of black metal ) It will sport a small black Jawa Perak luggagerack on the rearfender. I'll make a bracket so it can be bolted to the 2 bolts that hold the rearfender.
