I got my hands on a set of the new Michelin Pilot Road 4 Tires. I wrote up a review and my initial impressions on them. They also have a "trail" version for the adventure bikes that never leave the pavement. Check it out! http://www.spiritstrike.com/gear/2014/1/15/michelin-pilot-road-4-tires
I was thinking about a trail set for the Vstrom. I think the rear was $175 bucks though. :eek1 Trail - $27 more for a softer tire that wears faster huh?
Pretty sure they make the regular version in your 150 width. I'm thinking of trying it on my GS. and yes, I agree, not much reason for the softer compound except maybe for a track day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Very interested to see how these tires perform. Currently running PR3's on my fz6 and I'm very impressed with the amount of grip in the dry and the wet. Hopefully with the PR4's out, we will see prices for the PR2 and PR3 drop a bit
Will they still produce PR3's? Seems like they only bring out new tires just so they can raise their prices.
Geez I've been running PR2s the whole time the PR3 was out. Heard as much good as I did bad things about the PR3 and never made the switch. Might have to go to a cheaper ST tire for the VFR.
Not sure. I do know you can still get PR2 and PR3 tires though. Something has to get phased out eventually I would think. If I were Michelin I would replace the PR3s with the PR4s and keep the PR2s going. There is a pretty big difference between the PR4 and PR2 tires.
I believe they will :) I've got an FJR as well, but the thought of that bike in gravel.....I don't think I could pick it up by myself either :)
Why go through all the trouble of developing a new tire when it would be much easier to just raise the prices on the old ones?
Michelin has been improving tires since its inception many years ago. Thats why they're 2nd to none today, they never stop
PR2 still not at "clearance" price yet. you can get PR3 for $20 more a pair (180/120). another 20 you can get PR4
I've got Road 4's on as well. Haven't really done much on them yet other than commuting, but they perform amazingly well in the rain. A bit of a round profile rather than a V that I normally like, but they work well. As was said, there isn't really any major price advantage by going with 2's or 3's, so I opted for the 4's. When I had the 2's, after about 5-6k miles, they tended to not stick so well in the twisties. I'm hoping the 4's will work better, and they are supposed to last longer. Never got a chance to try the 3's.
I agree with the wet grip. I got in about 300 miles on them the other day and I was going easy on them at first, but by the end of the day I was dragging toes on wet roads and the braking in wet was awesome! Those PR4s are hands down the best tire I have ridden for wet traction. Here's a link to that ride I tried them out on. We had pretty much every situation on this ride to try them out on. http://www.spiritstrike.com/blog/2014/2/10/odd-pair-for-a-winter-motorcycle-ride
If you don't care about mileage then you have plenty of other options available. This tire is all about having an appropriate amount of grip while still returning very good mileage. It is not meant to dominate the twisties.
