Thankfully this was easier and cheaper to fix than at first thought. It took longer to get the parts in hand than it did to actually get the bike rideable again. My pickup coil was the reason I wasn't getting spark or fuel. I assume the ECU didn't know the engine was even turning when I would kick it over. The only way to replace the pickup coil is to buy a complete stator assembly for $250-300. I really didn't want to have to do that since the knew the stator was good. I started scouring sources online for pickup coils only to find out there weren't very many. I did find this spec list for Eletrexworld.co.uk http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Pick_up_Coils_160.html that pointed me in the direction of what other bikes might have the same pickup. It ends up KTM sell their pickup coils as separate units for $68 new. Being a cheap bastard and not wanting to blow $70 on a hunch I found one on Ebay from a 04 450 exc. Once I had the KTM coil in hand it was almost identical to the stock unit except for the shape of the mounting plate to allow clearance for the stator wire hold down. A little file work and everything fit together perfectly. 2 kicks and it runs like a champ If anyone ever has this issue the KTM part that I used is 59039034000 PULSER COIL KOKUSAN 4K3-A/B which is used on almost all KTM singles from 98-05. I want to thank Dennis at OverlandTrial.biz and Don a Cascade Motorsports in Mission BC for letting me pick their brains and come to the conclusion that it was only the pickup coil and not something more complex.
You da man, Brian! There's a trials this weekend at Straddleline. TL is going. You should go do the novice course. l I'm headed to Odessa for the D100 crowdfest, while I really should just go for a trials ride. Too many toys.
you can see the link in the trials classifieds $5500 with all the parts listed including the long range tank and white Honda style plastic which is brand new
Anybody in the USA, want a complete lighting kit One here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Montesa-4...29?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item5aee5039d1
I just picked up an 07 4RT and it came with a light kit that came from a 315R. Was considering maybe putting just the headlight on but didn't want to cause and issue with my 4RT) thoughts?
Congrats on the new ride. I saw that one on CL a few weeks ago. It looked like a great deal. As far as the headlight is skip it and get some led lights from cyclops Motorsports down in kent. He is in vendors and active in PNW. I was thinking about one of the light bars attached below the handle bar cross brace. That way you get a light and can run a fork tank if you need to. Before you do too much riding the new bike make sure to strip down the suspension and inspect/lube everything. Typos and nonsensical words courtesy of fat fingers on a make believe keyboard.
Thanks for the info on Cyclops Motorsports. found there site and they have some nice stuff. In case anyone wants to see what they have. http://www.cyclopsadventuresports.com/
My friend, who owns the RTL top middle, took this image on his iPhone whilst out riding with his brother and another mate.. I just converted it to black/white and then colorised to make things stand out a bit.
All start life here as 4rt Montesa's.. Andrew wanted something different. (he did actually own the Repsol on the right before as well) Here is my web article on what he has done to the bike .. http://www.r2wtrials.co.uk/html_files/rtl260special.html .. as you will see, it is much more than a sticker kit :)
My Dad's a old RTL NUT! was his favorite bike, Now he's bonkers for a 4rt. I've offered to buy him a new raga or beta but he wants "A Plunker" So... A few questions; -HRC&Monty don't Import anymore? -Are all these bikes I'm seeing are left overs from the halcyon days? or... -grey market? -Ebay UK is brimming with these babies, I made some calls, got some quotes&rates...and came up with all this. IF someone was so inclined. he could cherry pick the ebay stragglers in the UK for $4-8k US a pop (8 bike min to be financially feasible) > Bust the engines out and ship them back separately as frames and power units (To bypass some King George BS) >Reasemble stateside, post customs > At $6-10K for a bike (used) over here. Figure the guy would make $800-1800 on each bike for his trouble provided he could sell them. Which brings me to my next point -Is there a real market here for these bikes, I mean are there guys combing the web and driving 1000mi cross country to get them? Or are they just an exotic oddity? Surely I'm not the 1st one to look at this! Would be the Nichiest Niche market ever....or a terrible farce, either way thoughts?
It would be much easier to get one from Canada. Cascade Motorsports in Mission BC is the Canadian Importer and they can still have new ones. In fact this is on CL right now http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/nvn/mcy/3614903223.html less than $500 to ship to your door.
I hate to be a nuisance but I know next to nothing about bringing a bike (Offroad or otherwise) from Canada. What's the deal? Is it as easy as just tying it down in the van and then the ole' "Smile&Wave" at the border? If so, I think I just found my Father's Birthday gift! I'm vaguely familiar with import procedures and taxes at port and through parcel carriers (Post and UPS,FedEx, DHL), but I've never driven anything across the border?
Would you be shipping or getting it yourself? If your shipping the shipper should know what's needed. If you doing it on your own. Call us customs and your state licensing office. They should be able to let you know the skinny. Might be worth calling Canadian border service to see if there's anything that needs to be done to release the bike from Canada. The more I ride my 4RT the more I love it! However I was wondering what upgrads are worth my time? I see things like the V-Mar Suspension Upgrade, Fender Spacers, V-Mar & Jitsie Brake Pedal options. Not sure I will do any upgrading but would love to hear what others have done or like and why?
