This thread is for discussions related to the Tent Space Map which presents the contents of the Tent Space Offer thread with a map icon for each offer.

The 2015 update to AdvRider forum software broke an automated process written to assist in updating the map. This process handled offer deletions, additions and modifications, to ensure that the map displays current, complete and accurate data. It is being rewritten and significant progress has been made.

But for the near future, please be patient as updates may be less frequent than normal until the automated process is completely brought up to date.

    Tent Space List: the Map

Click here to see the current map using the google "myMaps" interface.

Location markers are purposely not precise but are in close proximity, usually within 5 miles of the actual offer location. Contact the person offering the space for precise location.

To add your own tent space offer to the map, post to the "Tent Space Signup Thread". Your offer will appear on the map with the next update.

STUFF FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO FONDLE THE DATA DIFFERENTLY:

Several formats are automatically published at each update. The data is current in all of them:

    All offers:
    artents.kmz
    artents.kml
    artents.csv

    US Offers:
    artentsUS.kmz
    artentsUS.kml

    Non-US Offers:
    artentsNON_US.kmz
    artentsNON_US.kml

kml and kmz files are the same except the kmz version is compressed. Most programs that support one also support the other, so kmz should normally be your preference since it is significantly smaller.

The CSV format is a slightly watered down plain text version

Alternative US/NON_US versions were originally published in order to split the data up to stay below a 1000 entry limit that used to apply to Google maps. These files are automatically generated by the update process, so they are still provided just in case someone has a need for them.

    Enjoy!

Thanks for taking the time Steve. Hopefully this can become a sticky as the tent space thread is so outdated now.

Thank you so much for doing this! This map was super useful, especially as a KMZ file. My droid has issues with opening up the map in a browser, but it did great importing the KMZ file into Google Earth! :clap

    Keep up the good work!

Any tips for getting this to work with an iPad?

Don't have a computer. I'm on a trip right now and have been trying to use this with no success.

    Thanks.

I just tried it on my wife's ipad, using the Safari browser, and it worked fine except it wouldn't display the map and the index at the same time, I had to toggle between them. Beyond that I don't know what to tell you... I'm not much of an ipad whiz.

But Google Earth does have an Ipad app... I imagine that should work to open up the kmz file for you. Can you give that a try?

I've tried it with the browser and with google earth. It comes up with the locations but only loads a blank white box when trying to view the post.

Currently trying this from a coffee shop in Sedona, AZ :lol3

Works on my iPhone, which should be roughly the same as the iPad.

You say you can view the map with the icons, but when you click on the link to the post you get a blank screen?

Sounds like it might be a setting somewhere involving links. If you go into settings under Safari, there's an option for where to open links. For what it's worth, mine is set to "in a new page." I've also got JavaScript turned on. I don't know if those settings will help, but it's worth a try.

I went back and tried it on my wife's ipad again and it opened the links fine.

Well there's your problem. They got vortexes out there :)

If you mean google maps, sure!

    1) Copy the link for the KMZ file listed in the first post.
    2) Go to google maps. You want "My Places", "Create Map", then "Import" at the top. A box should pop up prompting you to upload a file.
    3) The second box is "Or enter the url of map data on the web ". Paste the link here.
    4) ???
    5) Success?

I haven't tried this, but I don't see any reason it shouldn't work?

    Thanks much.

Feyala gave you some good directions, but unfortunately MyMaps has limitations that are exceeded by the Tent Space files. It currently will only expose up to 200 map features. So it loads up ok - no errors - but you'll only see the first 200 locations.

    Sorry.

    Ahh, boo.

I suppose an enterprising soul could probably break the main KMZ file into 200-location chunks or by state, etc, but might be more trouble than it's worth.

I didn't know about this limitation. Good to know for my own personal maps! I'll need to restructure the Giant Map Of Interesting Things for my own trip before it gets too monstrous, haha. Thanks!
