I guess there should be some more info added than just the pic.

I'm currently converting a cafe-style bike to a Dual sport. I'm trying to maintain a very roadworthy capability but have plenty of ground clearance and fuel capacity to get into(and out of) remote locations.

Planned changes include a 6 gallon(minimum) fuel tank, hard saddlebags(Jessie's{sp}), a bit more off-tarmac capable tires on a set of abusable rims. Not to mention a seat comfortable enough to ride on for all 6 gallons of gas.

VERY interesting! And 883s can be picked up relatively cheap. Too small for the cruiser crowd, but just about right for adventure riding! Keep posting progress pix.:nod

Lots of Torque in a compact package. Play with the gearing by going to chain from belt and it is a very smooth creature in rough terrain.

My bike has a 883 transmission but the engine is a 1250cc(10.5:1) with Ported XB(Buell) heads, and Screamin Eagle .536 Cams.

I am using a S&S Super E, but am tempted to switch back to the stock carb to reclaim the fuel economy.

Oh...ya forgot to mention some stuff...

The Forks are Storz 55mm(FATBOTTOM I), 34inch long(2 inches longer than stock), mid trees, Baja Design Dual 8 inch Halogens, PM Monaco rims(19f, 18r), PM 6 piston caliper, 13 inch floating rotor on the front, & a 10 inch flat track rotor on rear and a Grimeca caliper with torque arm conected from caliper mount to frame.

I'll mention the Ohlin's shocks on the rear, but to get the extra length I wanted I had to machine a spacer to go between the lower shock eye and the lower spring perch.

....And let me tell ya M15 x 1.0 is not a common thread to get a tap OR die for...LOL

LOL...you asked me how long my SHOCKS were... LOL

I got to blabbing and completely missed it.

they are the OHLINS HD141s with an additional 2 inches provided by a 6061-T6 spacer I made and inserted. (Totall length of 15.5 inches)

As they come from Ohlin's -
    P/N: HD141
    Length: 13.2” - 13.6” adjustable
    Stroke: 3.9”

This is one awesome bike. I have an 01 XL1200S that I rode to Alaska from Houston. My only real problem on the trip was lack of suspension. The tank is a little small too, but I carried 5 gallons of extra fuel. I have a Uly now and it is awesome. Maybe I will go back to work on the Sport and some day and see what I can do with it. Sweet.

Even though my old shovelhead 84 was a POS, and once left me stranded 2000 miles from home, I still have some fond memories of riding it.
I always though it sounded better than any big twin that I had heard.
Yours looks like a fun bike.

Cool bike. I'd love to see it when you get some spoked rims and dirt-worthy meat on them.

    Hats off to ya!

Great bike with even more potential! Bought the same bike with much the same vision in mind but chickened out when I did the math! Sometimes I regret it and still wonder how well it would have worked. Admire your commitment . Keep us posted!

    I've had some interesting hobbies/vehicles over the last 10 years...in 94-96 I built a 67 Chevy Shortbed(fleetside) with a 396 and Muncie for road racing...

Then starting in late 1999 to 2003 I built up a 460hp Ford Focus for the same(Specificaly the Silver State Classic).

and on a very different not..... I think the Sportster engine is ideal for the on/offroad role.

And I'll definately see about the durability in a multitude of enviroments.
