So we've been here six months now and i think its time i got my ass in gear and started looking for a bike. Ive been keeping an eye out but there doesnt seem to be much about. Ktms especially are very thin on the ground compared to the choice I had in the UK. So apart from Autotrader and Kijiji what other sites are useful to look at? thanks
Those are probalbly the best two sites... but this time of year choices are a bit slim. More will pop up as the weather turns nicer and the snow is gone. You can also check out club specific sites like www.odsc.on.ca (Ontario Dual Sport club), or look for other links off of the OFTR (Ontario Federation of Trail Riders) site. Are you looking for anything specific? You mention KTM. 950's for sale in Ontario are few and far between, and when they do crop up, you'll pay a premium price for one. KLR's and DR650's are more abundant, as are V and Wee-Stroms. Again, as spring pops it's head up, people (like me) will be posting up their bikes to swap them for something different. Happy hunting, and welcome to Ontario.
Bike fleamarket here, look for a pre 07 ktm, easy import from the us. Los chapter even after the costs to get it home.
Truthfully, I usually just do a search on google, which usually ends me up on autotrader or kijiji. Like "KTM 690 for sale in Ontario", and a bunch of links pop up. Strangely enough, sometimes bikes will show up on kijiji links via google that I wasn't able to find by directly going to kijiji. Another option, and possibly cheaper, is to buy from the US. Which is what I might end up doing, I've been finding bikes, from the dealer, for around $1500 less in the US.
You're options are often greater.. just have to factor in our 90 cent dollar, the cost of exchanging said bucks, cost to get the bike home, the 225 import fee, any hotels etc. The higher the bike costs the deals get better. Just need to be a smart consumer and know what you're looking for.
well if you are looking for a KTM 690 I will have one for sale in a bit. As stated when it is warmer people want to buy and sell . Hard to want to ride in 4 feet of snow right now. But google is your friend and I have looked out side of Ontario also. Last two bikes I bought from the east coast area.
i think it will be ktm tbh. Ive had 950 adv before and other ktms so ive been spoilt. my shortlist is probably ktm 690 enduro/ enduro r 950 super enduro 950 adventure 990 adventure baja or either one of late white or blue ones or even a 990 smt all of which there seems to be nothing out there my plan is to have two bikes again within a year i.e. having a big un like a 950 and a little 450/650 or something for dirt so i know ktms are expensive so id probably also look at things like xr 650 etc to help keep the overall budget down Steponit feel free to send me some pics/details of your 690 please i do like them. I would consider a trip to the US but will have to wait till ive got a trailer Regarding the money conversion i thought about this and being as i have UK money in accounts there still could transfer from that way as UK rate is pretty good. So basically im open feel free to show me anything you know upfor sale thanks again
Ya it would be great to be able to have both big and small bikes. I have not been on a 950,990 etc but loved my 690 for a do all bike. But if you get a 990 I would get a 450-350 as an off road bike. I can tell you my 500 feels so much lighter the my 690 does. So I would stay 500 or smaller for off roading. As for my 690 just sold this morning lol sorry. But I have a friend with a 2012 and 10k on it that might be selling it if you want.
wow that was fast feel free to send me some info. thank you if i could afford it i would have ideally a 690 (and a rallyraid kit) and a 990 smt but that would mean waiting a while. I liked the idea of the making the 690 into a adv type as it gives a bit more option of a do it all bike
Vroom vroom, can't wait to get my hands on it I'll be listing a wr450f street legal (Ontario blue plated) bike soon. PM if interested
haha typical! ive had a wr450 before fully tricked out. thanks anyway but i want something ive not had before really.
Man...you're in the wrong town for bikes mate! I wouldn't buy anything from any of the local stealers...not that any of them have anything to buy...and shite attitudes....My humble opinion. I bought my 2011 990adv from GPBikes in Oshawa (Or Whitby if you want to get technical). They are a KTM Dealer and have a real nice show room. Last time I was there they had quite a few 500 XC's and 690 Enduro's sitting on the floor. Their sales guys aren't too prick-ish and in fact are rather pleasant to chat with. At least the guy I dealt with, Jeremy. This is where I bring my business for my Ducati as well. There's a dealer in town for Ducati now, but IMO they look like a bunch of scared rabbits when they're around the Italian bikes....hell...at the bike show a few weeks ago the Ducati rep for the dealer was all smiles and handshakes but quuickly ran away after he found out I've owned a few....:huh I swear...I don't get this town....anyway...best of luck. Hope you find something nice
If you're converting currency, don't use the banks, particularly if you're doing $10k or more. Call Accu-Rate in advance on the day of the transaction to get a quote that they'll lock in for 1-2 hrs. Go to your bank and get a certified cheque or money order made out to Accu-Rate Corporation. Then go to the commercial window at one of the two Accu-Rate branches and tell them you want to buy C$ and they will give you a money order the better of the spot rate or your locked-in rate. The savings are material - I seem to recall saving $300-400 on a $25,000 USD conversion when I bought my Outback in the US. The savings are comparable at Custom House but I don't know if they have a walk-up window. They may only do electronic transactions.
yep ive realised this from looking around there s nothing seem s like there will be a long road trip involved:eek1
Ha! I get a chuckle out of Euro's when they realize the distance Canadians will travel without batting an eye. It's understandable I guess seeing as you come from a place where a 4hr drive will get you from one end of the country to the other and probably a good way's back again.....When we lived in Italy we went on a skiing holiday in the Dolomites....we lived in Rome. About a 6-6.5 hr drive. Our Italian friends just about fell over when we told them we did it straight in one shot only stopping for fuel....
to be honest miles dont bother me ive bought loads of cars over last few years that always ended up the other end of the country always the same! whenever we do miles i just keep going always do it in one stint. Even my women used to be all over the country talk about bad luck. I even met ones where i lived and only then to find out they were just visiting. Took me years to find one that lived in the same city!!
Long is relative. Buy an 06 950 from California. Fly in, have a great ride home. 4 days easy, 3 if you're in a hurry. In my experience, after its all said and done, the final bill is as much as 25% cheaper than buying in Ontario. The eastern USA is a day ride from Ottawa. Alabama is 18 hours. Florida 22 or so. So there's a big area of selection. Get the wife to drop you off at the Syracuse airport. Cheap flights from there. If you need a trailer you can borrow one of mine. I'm in Kingston.
