Viewing GPX files

If you don't have Mapsource or PC software that can support viewing .gpx files, there are a couple of freeby options.

For web based viewing, you can go to the Online GPX Viewer You can upload the .GPX file or point to the URL where it is located and it will display it for you using Google Maps.

If you are on your own PC you can download the free version of Google Earth, which will now also work with Mapsource. From there, you can do a File>Open and it will display the info in the .gpx file on the map.

These utilities will display track logs and waypoints with no problem. Complex Garmin routes will be more like a "connect the dots" display.

Did they give a release date?

I installed it a month ago after Garmin announced support for it from Mapsource so you could "fly" your route. It's pretty cool and the price is right. That API's for Google Map are that much of a big deal either, lots of code for parsing gpx files and loading points is already out there for the snagging.

So for my little project that I am doing... how do you save as a GPX file? I have Mapsource with the Metroguide

As long as it's a current version (see the other threads), you do a save as and then hit the pull down for file type and you will see gpx.

Cooool I downloaded the new version upgrade thingy....

Dang it... it doesnt say .gpx files.....

i have:
.gdp
.mps
.txt

You either don't have anything loaded to save or the update didn't work.

It will only give you those options if there is nothing open, like when you click on new, but don't create any waypoints or routes.

Create or open something and you should see .gpx in the list as well. If it's still not there then the udpate didn't wrok, check, help/about should say version 6.9.1.

If after all that, it still doesn't work, stay in school.

Ok... i admit there arent any tracks in my laptop.... damn serial link. I just tried ordering a serial-usb adapter

What GPS are you using?

I wanted the GPS V, but my parents couldnt find it. Legend works....

Yup, USB to serial adapter should work. You will know when you go to hit the upload from device button, it should come up and display GPS, or at least pick it up when you hit the Find Device button.

Well, yah see... I bought this really nice... really expensive laptop that has been great. I got all excited right before a trip, because i figured how to use the GPS attached to the computer (desktop at home) so that you have the routing and everything on the computer and the GPS is merely the reciever. I went to hook it up to my shiny new laptop and WTF? no serial port! damn it!

Getting the adapter....

It (serial-USB adapter) will work, I use one on my home PC with my GPS V

I am using a Lowrance iFinder. It doesn't seem to handle .gpx files only .txt

Is there a program out there that can convert .gpx to .txt ?

And the reverse too I guess so I could upload some of my routes or trails.
