There's a whole bunch of goop designed to keep skin comfy. Good article here. Most of the stuff is creamy, and on long rides I apply fairly liberally to the nether-regions. I also put it in my running shoes when I run sockless (very handy for triathlons).

Body Glide is similar, except it looks like a stick of deodorant. Better for rubbing onto other problem areas, such as nipples and just below my underarms when running.

More information than you needed. :D

Back to the chafing now that my computer wants to let me on it!

    :eek1

Seriously: snug is good. Tight is bad. Repeat that till you have it memorized. :D

Someone mention Swobo? I don't remember right now. PBS usually has some wool stuff. Hincapie made the wool base layer I like the best.

    That would be unfair.

I can descend faster than tandems.

I had some bike sprite pull up beside me on the ascent then slowdown and gimme the uber condescending "Man, good for you, out working over this hill." I was just spinning so we talked for a bit. Turned out he wasn't an asshole. Told him, I heard there was powerlifting contest at the top where I get a spotted a minute for every lb more I could lift. We figured he woulda had to finished four hours back in order to finish on my time.

It's good bein' a clydesdale as long as you ride your own ride and don't go chasin' fairies.

when I was racing a lot (slowly) there was one event with a Clydesdale class every year-no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get my weight up another 5 pounds to qualify. I figure it's gotta be one of the most fun classes anywhere to be in:thumb

I dunno. Yeah, sometimes you get to duke it out with big dudes that are more muscle than fat- but they inevitably put the clydes in the short version of whatever race you're doing. It's also quite popular with the just started racing and still have a lot of fat to lose crowd.

Doing the short race to beat up on a bunch of novices just doesn't appeal to me. I usually just go age category and have fun surprising a few of the whippets. Besides, these days it seems single speed is the hang out of choice for big guys that can ride.

I just bought one of these although I kinda bought it as a snowboarding jersey more than a bike jersey.

I hope they're right about going a size bigger... :dunno

On newer stuff, never. For the most part, the majority are all sealed cartridge type. You may still want to grease cups and races, however.

my buddy called me tonight to ask for advice regarding a beginner road bike. I've always been a big fan of finding a good local bike shop, and working with them.

He's in dallas. Anybody know a good shop there?

Keep your eyes peeled on Craiglist. I got a phenomenal deal on this one, then I sold off the original wheels, crank, bb, derailluers, saddle, seatpost, and recouped a lot of what I paid. Then I raided the boxes of stuff in my garage and equipped it with my parts. In the Bay area, quickbeams do show up (prolly because that's where Riv World Headquarters are).

Here are two ways I set it up: with fenders and fatties for winter, the other set up with 650'c for chasing the racers:
