AFAIK, the keys have a transponder in them which can only be sourced from BMW. Of course, you might be able to replace both the lock and keys, but them germans may have connected the ignition lock to the CANBUS, just for shits and giggles Didn't you get three keys when you got the bike? Did you lose two already?
If you have the key code you can get it from BMW for a reasonable price. If not prepare your anus. A baseball bat will get you in shape for the upcoming pain! GH
do we know if all models come with EWS standard? I ask because i found this document online and my key doesn't appear to have the transponder present
I didn't have the key code when I ordered a replacement. They got it through BMW records via VIN #,$63CDA.
WTF BMW Australia told me that if I lose a key - $370, lose both keys it needs a new CPU or whatever the unit is called - $1600. I have the spare key in a safe place. If only I could remember where that is?
Just bought 2.. called the dealer.... ordered over the phone... picked up a week later.... (made in New Jersey at the BMW US facilities using my vin number. around $100 for 2!!
check a different dealer.... I though i would need the little tab number with the plastic key...nope... not needed.
Not sure WTF those things are arrowed in your photo, but they're not transponders. The electronic bits are inside the plastic head of the key. AFAIK, all 800s come fitted with this (as it's a regulatory requirement in many markets and cheaper to make one model than introduce the complexity of two different ignition systems - same reason lots of Euro bikes now all come with ABS like it or not).
Just in case anyone searches this thread for current pricing, the tariff is now $95.88 for a key at my dealer (Sierra BMW in Sparks, Nevada) - over $100 with sales tax. Ouch. Now that other key that I put 'someplace safe' is sure to turn up...
The smaller non-metallic spare is about $75. I'm a little particular about stuff so after getting a bike with one key, I replaced the spare and a regular ignition key. It only took a day or two for the key to arrive at the shop.
I had to order one for my bike earlier this year. Cost me right around $100 or so from my local dealer. Expensive? Yes. Other options? No
Just asking. My preious bike a Yammie also transponder equipped had the key made up in less than 5 minutes at a locksmith. He put the original key in a computerized gadget which reads the code, made the new key and programmed it.
I am in the same situation, bought a used 2009 F800GS and the owner had only one original key. I ordered two blanks from China had them recut only to find out that when I inserted the new keys they bike threw EWS error message and it wouldn't start. So I need to order blank with the chip inside and find a local locksmith that can reprogram the new keys. I found these blanks on ebay that state that they have "ID46" chip https://www.ebay.com/itm/153568401549 Is that the right one?
