And I bet he tried to use it immediately thereafter, huh? Novel concept when water and circuits collide. If would have left it locked (unless of course he was using it and just dropped it) and blown on it very hard and given it a few minutes to dry out then he would have been fine. I couldn't tell you how many times I've spilled water on my speaker, the main button and such, and still have the same phone. I've blown on the end (yes this sounds bad) to where water comes out the spaces in the chassis and it is still fine. Don't be a meathead and expect things to work in certain conditions or mitigate things as best you can when you must work in those conditions and you'll be fine.
It may be a compatability issue with your zumo and Casio phone. I have an LG phone that will show my contacts and all my last calls. It does not show names on caller ID. It will pass music from my phone to the zumo but not in stereo. Another thing the zumo will do is connect to my B/T headset and I can then talk on the phone using the zumo as the console to operate the phone while the phone sits in my take bag or rear trunk.
I know you can't do this with an iPhone, but if you ever get a phone wet, immediately pull the battery. Let it sit for a couple of days and 9 times out of ten, you're okay.
No actually he didn't even realize it was broken until about 30 minutes later after he had blown it off and had been sitting inside the restaurant. So any other Iphone people want to try to get me to buy one? I got my Tundra today and am getting ready to start the abuse. It already had it's first motorcycle ride!
As for iPhone ruggedness, I use a rubber case and have dropped the thing down the stairs and on the concrete floor. I like the concept of the ruggedized phones but my phone is a business tool that i have a hard time doing without. Well the iphone got the ultimate test the other day. I took my jacket off while working on some home jobs and left it in the laundry room, I needed some more bits from the hardware store and left the house. Well who the F*#k would expect my SO to jump on the laundry. Well she found it after going the whole hog through the wash rinse spin cycles!!!! The phone freaked out for about a day, turning on/off resetting etc until the battery went dead. I thought i was going to be buying a new one, but after charging it back up it is once again fully functional! I am impressed! it has also survived 2 weeks in Baja on the bike plus many thousand Km running around riding and camping.
I just have a plain old BB Pearl 8130, but I put an Otterbox Defender case on it, and it's bulletproof now! Splash-resistant, with a membrane, then a polycarbonate shell, and a silicone skin over that! The reviewer on crackberry threw his down the stairs with no ill effect.
They have those for the iPhone now too. I had to replace mine when it face planted asphalt without a case. Its really nice, makes it kinda bulky though. *shrugs*
I really could care less what you or any one else buys. I was merely pointing out that they are not as fragile as you stated. And since you have such a positive and open minded attitude, I'll bow our of what could have been an interesting discussion.
What discussion would that be? That you know how it was treated and got broken which you didn't? That's sounds like a real one sided discussion to me. I also believe that they are that fragile and have several documented situations where they were so it's a battle that can only be won in a regulated test environment. To me that environment is at the DOD testing facilities. The MIL-Spec comes from some pretty rigorous tests that a normal phone will never survive. For a better idea of what goes into it check out the DOD guide here http://www.dtc.army.mil/publications/810.pdf and start at page 70 for the testing requirements. I would love to see an Iphone get tested just to see if it would pass any of these tests.
For Verizon customers a new model is available online and in stores Nov. 30th. Its the Casio G'zOne Rock. It meets Military Specs 810F standards for ruggedness and has a flashlight, compass, thermometer, moon phases, tides and lots of other features. 2 year contract price is $200 less $50 online discount. I'll check it out when it hits the stores. Capt D.
I've showered with my Boulder nearly every day since I bought it in '08 just before the Indy Moto GP race. I have a 7:36am alarm that goes off in the morning to tell me to GTFO of the shower so I can make it across the street to the middle school by 7:55. Its been in the rain, in a river when canoeing, etc. and I've never had a problem. It's also been dropped in the drainage ditch where I park my bike at my second job (long story on why I park there). I understand the iPhone and BB's serve purposes that my phone can't, but the guys/gals touting them as rugged phones makes me want to go for a ride on teh lollercoaster!
