In my opinion, I think the biggest issue with modern 450's as adventure bikes, is their small oil capacity.
I know there are options to improve capacity and I think that should be at the top of the list of mods.
    just my 2 cents

Just buy Bygdaddy a pie and look at his bike. Paul Coster in Samford has one set up for the APC. You could try my bike if you like, it works perfectly for me. Why did you go away from the 690??

thanks for the offer,690? thats a long story but one of the main reasons ktm could not stop it from stalling in and out of ktm more times than out, coming to a corner or ring road or in the bush and some times just riding along it would have a quick stall/cut out, shit me up once on a ring road nearly came off if i hadn't put my leg out quick enough + other things that pissed me off,but when she was going she was going brill bike :clap
    who's the guy in samford?

Just got off brand new 690. Brilliant bike, no stalling now. Thought it might be my next bike, then got back on my WR. WR for me is just nicer, lighter, more than enough power, simpler and much better geared. Also bulletproof without the KTM's small issues as stated by others.

I don't think you could ever not be on blue Gordon, If you went to the Doc with a cut they'd run out hysterically cos of the blue oozing out of ya :lol3

If my 610 wasn't so good of an allrounder the WR would be next on my list, Soooo many options and bomb proof reliability.

    I have an adveturised 2007 ktm525

Heaps of aftermarket bolt ons to make a lightweight adv bike

Puts a smile on my face every time I ride it

Perfect for pub touring weekends. I use wolfman e12 bags & duffle.

There is a thread here one 525 as adv bikes

    Umm, where do I start?

I bought a WR450 last year specifically to set up as a light ADV bike
Biggest trip so far was about 3600km round trip from Gunnedah to Cameron Corner & back, at which it preformed brilliantly

    Modifications?
Bash plate, rad guards, bark busters
Home made screen / fairing from a plastic chemical drum to cut wind blast
    16 l Safari Tank
    Cheap ebay rack
Wolfman enduro tank bag, tank pannier bags, E-12 saddlebags, fender bag
Had a 45 tooth Kush sprocket on the rear which was brilliant until it failed, although the rubbers failed it continued driving for the 2700 km rest of the trip with little or no deformation of the metal parts
    15 / 45 gearing - sit on 120 all day, easy 150 +
Oil changes? It's pretty easy to carry a litre bottle of oil & a zip lock bag to drain oil into, dispose at next convenient town etc. doesn't take long to change oil, happy enough with 1500 - 2000 km changes in ADV type riding
You can increase oil capacity, I did look into it but from memory about $600 - $800, that buys a lot of oil. Also, something else to leak / fail / go wrong? I like to keep things simple

Had swag on rear rack, fuel bladder strapped to it
    Water in left saddlebag
Camp clothes / toiletries in right saddlebag
Oil, clean air filter, bike maintainence stuff in left tank pannier
Gas stove etc / head torch , camp stuff etc in right tank pannier
    Dehydrated food in camelback backpack
Glasses, phone, wallet, hat, etc in tank bag
This setup easily enough for a week away as long as you like things a bit minimalistic

Wish Kush sprockets lasted a bit longer, I be happy if I got say 5000km
Would like a Cush hub but too many $$$$ at the moment, a Cush clutch basket from a quad bike apparently is another option & cheaper, will look into that

Headlight is crap, I just mounted some cheapy LEDs either side of headlight, not much distance but good spread either side, I try to avoid night riding if I can

Mounted a USB outlet on handlebars hard wired from battery to charge phone

The MAJOR modification needed is the seat, either re upholstering or getting a Seat Concepts kit, original seat not good for long hours

'A' on this forum had a couple of good write ups about setting up his sons WR450 for a CSR trip, I think they did about 6000 km in that trip

Happy for you to PM me any questions

Another mod I will make, is to add framework to the rear rack to carry the weight on the foot pegs, plan to strap jerrycans to this for increased fuel / water

    Cheers

    Roy

That's why I don't want to ride one, I might want one and sure as hell can't afford to do that, if you know what I mean:lol3
