Big D got a letter from the Wisconsin DMV yesterday stating that since his XR650R was not originally designed to be street licensed, therefore his plate and registration are revoked. His title and plate are expiring in 10 days and cannot be transfered to another state or renewed after that time.

    Unfortunately this isn't new.

This is the first I've heard about in WI though.

I don't understand why, if an owner modifies a motorcycle to comply with ALL of the current Federal Safety Standards, that it shouldn't be legal to plate and ride.

If they complain about the money it would cost the DMV to inspect each cycle that was applying for compliance/registration. Charge a fee for it. They charge for everything else.

Many of the dirt guys really only want a plate for riding connectors, not cruising downtown tearing up our tires.

It's a different story for the SuperMoto conversions though. Even so, if the bike complies with the Federal Regulation. Why do they care beyond that? The governments at State and Federal levels are spending more money than they take in as it is. They are eliminating a certain amount of dollars by refusing to register these motorcycles. They could have even MORE money here in WI if they would develop an ORV program similar to Michigan's.

    Too many rules....

From what I've gathered it's the custom cars and choppers that are getting alot of attention and our little rigs are just along for the fall...can you imagine having a 100K dollar chopped cruiser that got it's title pulled?? Anyway..the rules for Michigan are you can have a wisconsin residence and register your bike..but you have to have a Michigan address to mail it to...so when do we open the Central ADVrider flop house..100 guys is all we need to pay 10 bucks a month for our palace (1K a month rents a nice spread)?? Who's in?

Do not open any mail from the DMV. Got it. I'm pretty good at playing stupid.

I guess plan B would be to get it inspected and signed off on, but who knows at that point.

I tried that with mine...they wouldn't even look at it if it didn't have an EPA emissions sticker
