Hello fellow riders, I am new to the board here and failry new to the D/S scene. The wifey-poo did me right and got me the 60CSX for Xmas, a buddy of mine hooked me up with roads and rec vice those crappy maps Garmin gave me. So I went ahead and got a 5 gig memory chip for the 60 but I was never able to get all of the US loaded into the unit. It kept telling me "1253 maps to many" (or a close number). So I kept reading and goofing and finally loaded all the CD of roads and rec to it using vista and looking at the gps as a USB mass storage device. This hovever did not work as I tried the "show roads and rec" option inder menu but it does not show mee all of it. I can tell since I left out all of Florida, Maine and others to get it to fit and avoid the "1253" message above. I was tols that with a bigger memory you could load all of the CD to the unit. So I guess I need to know how do I delete the partial raods and rec so I can view the entire roades and rec? Do I need to delete it all and start over? I did use it a few times and have saved all my tracks on a PC so a total "dump" would be OK. Thanks for the help guys and keep riding.
a) the 60 x will only acess upto 2G on any card .. so you may as well buy the 2G cards .... rather than waste money on extra you cannot use. b) the 60 will only acess upto some number of 'tiles' (the map segments) ... so you could have a few cards .. overlay the areas that they cover so you don't have to stop and change cards at some place .. overlap by at least a days ride so you can change at night wihen stopped. c) You are using mapsource? If so when you send the maps to the GPS it will eliminate the maps already in the GPS (except of the base map). This does not effect the saved tracks .. or waypoints.. All of this (and a lot more) is in the manuals .. There is a riders guide over on www.ukgser.com that you might like to read through?
OPPS!!!! You are correct, I put in a 2 gig card, nit sure whee/why I said 5 gig, sorry for the bad info. But it did not load all of the maps, I just looked again at El Cajon area and there is nothing but I-8 and 67, so I have to say that this is the maps that came with the unit. How would I view all the maps/CD I loaded to the 2 gig card?
I had Mapsource open and "highlighted" all the US and originally got the error message about too many maps (2025 I think). Then I did it again as a USB mass storage device, I think I just copied it to the card under explorer. Did I answer that correctly? If not can you tell me the correct to load all the maps from the CD to the unit and avoid the error message of too many maps. I apoligize for not being able to answer your question, but what is the difference? Thanks
Ok I just cleared card using explorer, so I CAN'T load the whole R and R cd to my unit with a 2 gig card? If so what is the benefit of having a 2 gig card? I know you can save tracks to card but 2 gig worth? Thnaks again for the help
I think the Roads & Recreation map set has smaller map segments and lots of them. Too many to load all at once in the 60X series. The newer map sets have larger segments. City Navigator North America 2008 has only 353 map segments for all of Canada and the US.
You may want to look at getting a newer version of software... Roads and Rec was discontinued in 2004. The Newer versions of City Navigator NT are more compact and will load the entire US in just over 1GB... I'm not sure what the Roads and Rec total space is. Also the 60CSx only accepts 2025 map segments... How many total did you try to load? The City Navigator NT product has something like 64 segments, where the non-NT version is more like 2x the size and over 300 segments... maybe that old Roads and Rec version has too many segments. I'd suggest getting the newer City Navigator 2009 NT
Roads & Rec breaks the maps down by *county* so it certainly has more than the 2025 segment limit (over 3200). Total R&R file size for the CONUS is only ~ 500 mb. As others have said - bite the bullet and get City Navigator NT. You need to load the card using Mapsource, can't just copy stuff on the card in Mass Data Storage mode using Windows Explorer. (well, actually you can but only if they are pre-built .img files you created with Mapsource anyway).
Yea the "county" reak down is correct, I figuered it out by removing them one by one until I got to the 2025 magic number. OK guys thanks for the help it sounds like I won't be able to do what I want with what I got. So let's just say I go get a newer set of maps tomorrow how will I delete the old stuff off to free up space? Is the 2 gig card really a benefit to me? Thanks again
Do you really need the entire US map on there at once? I mean, if you are riding in a certain area then just load that area on there. Or, I got City Navigator NT and roads and rec when I did the TAT but instead of loading every state (from R&R and CN NT) I just loaded all the states from CN NT and only the western states from R&R, since that is where I figured I would have the most trouble navigating.
I have R&R and Topo for all of Nevada, southern California, the Mex2Can route, CDR route in 117 Meg. Lots of space left for tracks. 2 gig card in 76Cx
depends on what kind of riding you are doing. I'd rather load once and get it over with, especially if I'm riding cross-country. If I were a rider that hardly ever left my state, or rode 200 miles per day, it might be easier to justify loading a segment of maps. But loading all the maps means I don't have to worry about it later and can concentrate on waypoints, routing, etc.
Very true, but there is really nothing worth riding east of the rockies! Also the 60 is not suited to ride across the US east-west.
City Navigator V8 fits on on 2 gig card with a fair amount of room left over for tracks, etc. I will be updating to the next version shortly.. I don't know if that will all fit. ..Tom
Hey guys thanks for all the replies, lots of good info/help. Well I WAS planning ti load the whole map set like tedder stated. Do it once and be done. I do ride lots of difference places but yea I could load the 10 states around me a be well within a safe buffer. Just kinda bums me out that you buy a Garmin device and their own stuff does NOT work (like I want it to) correctly. As for east of the rockies........well there is the other half of the country!!!
:huh That's like being pissed at Microsoft because your brand new computer won't run Windows 95 Countdown is starting to sound like he's from California...
Kaliforna is just the left coast version of back east. The real west ends at least 100 miles form the Pacific.
