DIY panniers for my uly.

I wanted a set of panniers for my new to me 06 xb12x. Being that I am kinda cheap, I couldn't bring myself to pay for the commercially available panniers and racks. After a lot of research I decided to go DIY.

Are you referring to the tank bag, or did you fab up panniers, but yet to post pictures?

Sorry got interrupted. So I started with some 1/2 inch pipe.
I fabed the hoops using store bought bends and used some scape I had around for the mounting brackets. Once I had those in I made the supports that go behind the passenger pegs and the rear mounts. Finish welded and painted it

I was originally going to use 30mm ammo cans for panniers, but a buddy of mine had a bunch of scrape aluminum and offered to make a set. We took the measurements off the 41 litter zenga panniers and away he went.
They turned out pretty nice. Next was the mounting hardware. I used so polyurethane tie rod bushings, fender washes, 1/4 inch bolts and bar stock.

Got the mounts done last night. I am going to start finishing the boxes this week.

If I may make a suggestion, put the heads on the inside of bottom bolts, or it's gonna hurt your knuckles when you rummage around.

Very true twin. I'm going to get shorter bolts as well.

Why not just turn the bolts around so that the head is on the inside? And make them button head hex bolts while you're at it - that's what I run on my cases anyways.

No idea how big your ass nor that of your pillion is but the panniers should have a slimming affect...

You do know Harley still sells the frames right? Ooops, just re-read your OP.. Ok, this is cheaper, I think you can get the HD frames for $180 from the MoCo. Not 1/2" tube tho', you'll be able to carry pig iron camp stoves on those things!

I saw the oem harley ones. Honestly I just figured I could do it myself, plus I enjoy it. Gives me something todo after the kids go to bed. The bonus is I'm in the whole project about 100 bucks. The racks cost about $30 for the steel and probably $10 for paint and consumables. I do have the advantage of having a lot of fab tools or accesses to what I need, but a person could do the same with minimal tools.

So basically done. When it warms up I'm going to clear coat them.
