Went into a shop today to buy a new helmet and sniff around at some 2 wheel toys when my wife & dad spotted the Ural Patrol. Neither one of them ever really cared for bikes, but the Patrol in red gave them both a stupid little kid kind of grin that was hard to ignore. I'm a bout a year away from buying a new bike, but a hack ( much less a Ural) never even popped up on my radar of potential bikes. Now .. I think I have some reading to do:

Be ready for a long reading and I'm not sure that in the end, you'll reach a concensus :norton
Only consider the feed back from Ural users

Went through the same brainstorming 4 years ago, the pro and cons, reading on SS, CURD etc...and in the end I got a Retro. Almost 12000 kms since (our season is 6 months long in QC), not a single issue and a constant smile on my face.
Remember that the prep done by the dealer (carb set-up, alignement etc) is key. Don't buy from a dealer that has no experience with Ural.

Turned 18,000 today on the Ural - only issue so far is all the beer people buy me when talking about it.
Yes, they have issues and are not for everyone. Slow, cranky, high maintenance.
Effing love riding it. If I'm in a hurry I leave sooner.

Me too. Unfortunately I couldn't tolerate the limitations if it was to be my only ride. Still want one.

The "why you should not" thread was the tipping point on my decision to buy my first Ural about a year ago. Just went and bought another.
You've got to wonder if maybe he should be given a commission on each new bike sold. :rofl

How fast can the Ural go with a passenger? My Enfield maxed at 50mph with a girl in the car and one on my back (the best thing about sidecars) this past weekend. The speed limit was 65 but when you drive a hack people let you get away with whatever you want. A Capitol cop was chatting me up about the bike while I was taking this pic while he was moving along all the cars that tried to stop :rofl

I haven't had this thing long but no matter what hack you buy I don't see how you can go wrong! It's like being in a parade when you drive around so be prepared to wave :D

Not only does riding a Ural give me a lot of 'fun factor', but it also brings smiles to a lot of faces. This crazy contraption makes kids gleeful, makes old people happy, and solves global warming! What's not to like?

One thing the world needs more of are smiles :D

    and beer :freaky

My feelings also, at least at this stage of my riding career. But I can envision the day when I won't want to be holding a bike upright any more. But the plan is to be driving a sidecar when I'm 100.

Thanks for the replies. Did some reading about problems that everyone discussed, but also read some ride reports and yeah the wife is still talking about it today. She / we really wants one and yeah in 10 months I'll see what's up and if things stay as they are now....

If I were you I'd keep that pretty little thing happy and buy her one. 23,000KMs or so on mine without issue. When riders ask about mine I tell them to keep their 2 wheelers though. Completely different beasts.

If you only get one, you have to answer the question: who gets to drive?

If Podge has the chair on the right hand side like the one in Canoli's pic', I'm not surprised he hates it.
