My R90 Project is coming along nicely...

The motor is back in the frame and reassembly has officially begun. Clutch assembly is in and the transmission will be mated one day this week after work.

74 - one owner who died and left it to his son (bird hunting buddy) who then sold it to me. Purchase was contingent on me completely refurbishing to new condition.

The brown hairy thing on the back was unique to that year.

Stuff like this needs a home.

Make sure you are tapping on the bearing race, as opposed to a lip inside the headtube. Sometimes if a tapered bearing type of race, is in a place that does not let your punch reach it squarely, you can make or bend a punch for better results. The punch should be flat and sharp, rounded punches do not work well. For one that is truely stuck, you can use a dremel with a sanding disk to barely slice through the race, and it will fall out easily. A brass punch is usually too soft to get the stubborn ones to move, the punch deforms or breaks away before race can move. A large dia steel punch with a freshly ground tip surface, and a large hammer will get most of them out. You will not be reusing the races anyway.

heat and lots of pounding. There is not a pretty way to do this.

These photos were posted almost a month ago... how's it looking now? I've got a'76 R90 that is my daily rider... I'd love to tear it down and clean it up, but i can't keep off the damn thing long enough

I haven't made much progress... decided I need to replace the gasket for the seal which hides the oil pump while I was in there. This decision forced me to pull the clutch back off. There's five bolts that hold the clutch plate on and can only be used once and I had to reorder them from the east coast for the second time.

The cylinders are being honed as we speak... hopefull get the clutch, tranny, and shaft drive on this weekend. Maybe the cylinder heads too.

It'll be done in about 5 years at this rate.

Cylinder heads got a glass bead blast treatment... no more oxidation.





Other than that, progress has been slow waiting on parts.

Waiting on parts.. ever heard of airhead salvage? web address is www.airheadsalvage.com He's convenient to me since it's close to Austin, but he's also got tons of parts and I know he's not afraid to ship 'em.

the heads (had them rebuilt and converted to unleaded by San Jose) and the transmission have been mounted. I need to take some pics, but this project is gaining some momentum again.

Thanks for the update mate, what does the conversion involve besides valve guides?
