This kit can also be upgraded to Fit my Classic style panniers with the angles around the bottom, plus top-boxs if needed. For the Classic style panniers add an extra $150.00 This post is really about buying as a kit, i will be trying to put kits together for the F800/650GS and also the Tiger800 and the Tiger1200 Basic kits, good value.
Regarding fitting to an R1200GSA, using existing pannier frame, do/can the panniers actually key-lock onto the frame? Also, is removing the pannier done from inside the box, or outside the box? (i.e. where is the release latch located?). Some other questions: 1. Would you rate them as waterproof, water resistant, or dry-bag is a must? What sort of seal-system is built into the lids? 2. Would it be possible to see some pics of the innards, and under the lids? 3. What thickness aluminium are you using for them? 4. Is the powder coating that 'hammertone' finish? Or just a plane, non-textured, look? 5. Can they be ordered without the recessed lid handle (in the middle of the lid)? Sorry for all the questions, but I have found it really hard to buy this sort of stuff site-unseen in the past! All the info you've got would be great. They look fantastic, and it's great to see some Aussie-made options available. Cheers,
Hi, the panniers dont key lock, they use a puck and loc tab for mounting. The panniers are built from 2mm sheet This photo is for the lids. There fitted with a block rubber seal in the lid, a alloy angle is welded under the lid to hold the seal. the powder coating is the textured look. These are fully tig welded and waterproof Without the recessed handles are no problem, may have to make and powder coat a set, i just end up with to much stock sitting on the shelf to carry everything. To remove the panniers first you have to remove the lockable lids and undo the lock tabs from inside the box.
Thanks for getting back so quick. They look like a great piece of workmanship. I only mentioned the handles on top cause of the tendency for corrugations to cause any edges to pretty well saw through anything touching them. (ie tent strapped on top). I'm planning a 2 week trip over to Warburton early next year (once it cools down up there at least), from Adelaide, and will likely need more storage than my soft panniers can offer. Will be chasing dirt as much as possible. These look like they'll do the job nicely. What sort of time frame should I allow for an order? (Am thinking of the Classics for the GSA, powder coated, let's assume you have none in stock and need to make them from scratch).
To build a set from scratch with powdercoating a bit over 2 weeks, if i ask the powder coater to hurry the job through make it a bit over 3 weeks. I normally have a couple of set of lids without handles kicking around, soom i will also have my own expandable lit top bags, but there a couple of months off. If you need more photos or anything else just contact me through lachlan@mtdtours.com Cheers Lachlan
Hey Locky, quick question mate, are you making panniers to suit the Triumph 800XC? I'm after a plain basic set. Cheers Bill
Hi bill, when you say 'plain' basic set is it raw alloy your after, if so yes i have a set here made up $895.00 for a kit, thats pannier frames, panniers one with a cut-out for the exhaust and a pannier mount kit, pucks and loc tabs and all the fittings. $895.00 Cheers Lachlan
Locky Can you stick up some pics, words & price for your DR650 rack system? I've got a mate wanting to suss them out. Thanks.
I've got a set of these boxes and they're world-class - easily a match for the stuff from Germanland; They even take being whacked into the bench at Campsite picnic tables with no structural damage..... Being a notorious tight-arse, I grabbed a set which came up second-hand - only set I've ever seen offered for sale; One of the latches had lost its lock on a previous trip around Australia; when I contacted Locky about the cost of a replacement, he sent it gratis. Free. No charge. Despite the fact that I hadn't paid him for the boxes but bought them second-hand. That, Ladies & Gents, is Customer Service - something which most traders in Australia have either forgotten, or never knew. The only way these panniers could be improved? By having a slide-out fabric bag to sling over your shoulder as you step into the hotel. But if you're weighing up the cost of these or boxes from Germanland, Remainhere, India, China or wherever, you not will be unhappy with Locky's products, his price or his service. For the next or other bikes, I'd certainly only make one call. (NB: No affiliations other than as a very happy non-customer!)
If anyone is looking for luggage i will be out of Australia for the next few weeks, My daughter is in the ICU ward of Dubrovnik hospital and i am going to rescue her and bring her home. This is what happened to her, http://dubrovacki.hr/clanak/43842/freak-tornado-wrecks-havoc-in-dubrovnik she has a cut through her liver, kidney and lung damage and cuts and bruses with some stiches here and there, the kids first holiday. To contact me e-mail is best, lachlan@mtdtours.com
Thinking positive thoughts Locky. If needed contact the nearest embassy (London ?) and they may be able to arrange an Aus doc to accompany her back. My cousin needed a medical escort from Rome a fews years back after it was clear the local hospitals weren't helping his situation. As far as the DR pannier racks go guys i've had had mine for more than a year and I can vouch for them. They're built better than the rest of the bike.
Dang, got some panniers on order too! Oh well, family always comes before work. Hope all goes well for you mate, hopefully we will see you back home soon with a healthy (maybe sore) daughter in tow.
