I'm a noob at this, so I'm learning as I go, but I have been building some maps for a trip next month. I put together about 6 or 7 maps as part of the trip, and this time when I went into mapsource to add more detail all my maps were gone. Well not all, but all my recent maps. The odd thing is, the map I intentionally deleted last time was there. How does this happen? I am positive I saved every map I worked on because this is the second time this has happened. I have lots of time to rebuild my routes, but what a PITA What am I doing wrong? Suggestions?
Kind of hard to tell what you did. Mapsource doesn't save "maps". It saves files of information with routes, tracks, waypoints. Look for the files you created. If you saved each one with the same name, you just overwrote all your work. If you saved each one individually, the file is likely somewhere on your computer.
A Mapsource file can also save selected map sections. I have several files all set to download to customers.
You don't go "into mapsource" you open a Mapsource file. If you just click on the Mapsource Icon, you are opening a new "Untitled" and empty file. To find your file with saved map sections, go to Explorer and find the file, then open it.
Countdown, your right, I was opening Mapsource, then selecting file>open, and then getting the map I wanted to modify. In future I'll do as you suggested, but I have run a search on the maps I saved, and nothing comes up. They were saved, about 6 of them, because they were there earlier. Any other suggestions, before I call Garmin and they put me on ignore for a hour or so.
You didn't boot up last known good or power off your system with out shutting down did you? Since you were missing what you thought was saved data and old data was showing up again it sounds like you went through a system boot with out your work being saved.
Ok, several times I have saved routes but I dont see them listed. I click on file and Ill see a list of some of the routes I have saved. I click on one of those and there will be 2 or 3 routes listed. So, check your routes and see if there is more then one route there. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o> </o> I have had so much trouble with this software. MapSource doesnt recognize my GPS and I cant transfer files to/or from my GPS. <o> </o> I was going to return my Zumo. I wanted a GPS so I could make routes on my computer and transfer them to the unit. But I have found the Zumo a lot of fun to use and very useful even though I do not have the full capabilities of the unit. I dont know, grin and bear it I guess.
when I uploaded Mapsource to my pooter, first thing I did was I went into MY GARMIN folder and there I created several more folders..Street Rtes--Topo trax and in thos folders I created other subfloders pertaining to the areas or locations and this is where I put my saved routes and tracks thus making it easy to find a route or track for a particular area or event..much more organized than dumping all saved info into one mass folder.
Of course, I have route names that are folders too. That is what is going on. I have no idea how I did that.
This is what I did. I opened a new map in Mapsource, created a route, then saved it, for example Colorado. Then I opened another Mapsource blank and created another route called New Mexico, and save that, and so on. I transfered a couple of my finished maps onto the 2720, and yesterday I transfered them back to the Mapsource. The 3 files (routes) that I transfered to the 2720 as names ie (states) came back as 3 routes on one map. In future, for example, should I open Mapsource, call it USA, then put 5 or 6 different routes from my planned trip on that one file? Should of stuck to paper
Not trying to get picky - but what you have in Mapsource is a file containing information, like routes, tracks, and waypoints. It is possible to open multiple Mapsource files and then copy the information from one to the other by doing a simple right click copy and paste. And as Countdown noted, it is possible to download actual maps to a Garmin GPS, which may wipe out whatever other maps you have loaded. So be careful with that. But that doesn't seem to be what you are trying to do here. Do a search on your computer for all .gdb files. If you saved them as different names, they will still be there and you can copy and paste all the information together.
When you transefered the files to/from your computer did you have transfer routes checked? I'm confused because I think you're using the term "maps" when you really just mean "route"
9Dave, thanks for the info, I did search the computer for gdb files, nothing. Gramps - I did have the routes box checked. Thanks guys, I've pretty much given up on finding these completed maps, so in future I'll save routes onto one map. Thanks for everyones help.
do a search for .gdb files on your computer. Maybe windows will find them somewhere. If they are there, it will find them. If you deleted them they should be in your recycle bin. if you have not emptied the bin they should still be in there.
As 9Dave said (at least twice), this is not correct terminology. You are not saving anything onto a map, you are saving Mapsource .gdb files.
When you transfer routes to the GPS from several Mapsource files they will just add up on the GPS. If you transfer them back (why would you do this?) they will all be in the one Mapsource file you opened up to do the transfer. Why would you *not* put all of your planned routes for a certain trip in one Mapsource file? You can just name your individual routes within the file by state if you want. You can just transfer all the routes from this one file at the same time rather than having to do it for every file.
