Sure thing. I got a few generic USB-cigarette lighter adapters and lashed them up. I got them from Harbor Freight, but something like this from Amazon is the same basic deal:



On my old bike, I put a ciggy socket under the saddle on a manual switch. then ran a USB cable from the socket, under the trim, and up to the RAM mount.

On my current bike I have a socket connected to the switch CANbus GPS connector, mounted using DuoLock under the fairing, so I can use the USB adapter. Be sure to get a socket with a weather cover!

My GPS, phone, MP3 player, and even laptop can all be powered or charged using the adapter and their specific cables.

I can get a photo if you like, but I have a Marsee tankbag that hooks into the bikes electrical system. it has connectors for a cigarette lighter adapter and BMW powerlet socket.

I have a palm pilot and ipod charging while I ride using the cigarette lighter adapter with a dual USB adapter, (http://tinyurl.com/l37mnp) and a flashlight recharging on the BMW socket.

You can get a kit from them to convert a standard tankbag (http://tinyurl.com/nebbbv)

this works very well, and has for 5 years or so.

Accepts a straight 12V input so you could wire it straight to the power system of the motorcycle and power multiple USB devices from it. Not saying better than the power, to cig, to usb setup but something to consider I suppose.

I have recently tackled this issue. My solution was standard 12V port with this insert...

I have the same one, but mine has 2 ports. I wired it up inside my tank bag and kept my Ipod, camera and phone charged while on the road.

Motorola Razr won't charge from a standard USB. :ddog Otherwise, I could lose my Motorola 12V charger.

Neither will some of the NUVI Garmin GPS...........not enough current flow on a standard USB. I have a portable hard drive that uses two USB connections to solve the power problem.

You mean computer-connected usb, or 12V usb adapter? Our RAZRs work fine with the 12V adapters (I use them with TomTom and nobrand 12V usb chargers).

On the pc, you'll need to install the driver for motorola (can be downloaded free).

I made mine, its a $1.49 voltage regulator from radio shack, and a usb connector.

lm7805, takes anything DC up to 35 volts, and makes it 5 volts DC, pins 1 and 4 on the USB are power.

Yeah, my Blackberry won't charge using my Motorola 12v cord. So, multiple cords sometimes.

I've got the driver on my computer....

My understanding was that the Motorola phones look for some sort of electronic signature from the charger. Simply hooking it to a USB port won't charge the phone. I've got a battery-powered USB plug, and my Razr doesn't do anything when I plug it in. Other devices I have operate or charge fine using it.

What kind of 12V adapter do you use to charge your Razr?

Checkout monoprice.com for some really inexpensive stuff. You can pick up a car charger to USB for $.83!!! Shipping is reasonable too! I bought a bunch of them just because they were so cheap.

When I don't want to use a tank bag for charging my stuff for day rides, I plug a powerlet cigarette socket + mini USB charger into my GS's side power socket. Run the apple USB power cord to my iPhone in my pants side pocket. Works like a charm. Can be done with most cell phones that use USB 5 volts to charge.

LM7805 has 3 pins.



pin 1 input is any DC voltage from 5-35 volts.
pin 2 is ground ( for both input and output)
pin 3 is regulated 5 volt DC output, up to 1amp.

you should install a small heatsink on the unit to keep it cool if you are using it at near an amp of current, or it will get hot either shut down or not last long.



Pins 1 and 4 on the USB are what you power.
