Sorry for the basic noobie question.

I currently ride an '07 Burgman 400 about 5K per year -- mostly commuting -- and want a 950/990 KTM Adventure. None exist where I am that I know of (Des Moines, IA -- buried in snow at the moment).:vardy

Any thoughts on whether someone with a 31" inseam is right for a 950/990 Adventure? I need a bike like the Adventure to do everything from commuting to weekend adventures to trips to the Colorado mountains. The commuting part worries me because of the height of the bike, especially moving from the Burgman.

    Thanks.

Your inseam isn't the issue, it's whether you are inclined to let your inseam be an issue.

Many many short folks ride 950 Adv's very well and without issue, but for some it is just to big for convenience.

You have to ask yourself what you want to use it for and what height convenience means to you.

They can also be lowered, but to many (including me) this is blasphemus talk.

I have a 32" inseam and put 10,000 miles on my 950 last year. No prob and I can barely touch both my toes on the ground. When things get dicey in the dirt at low speeds, I close my eyes and start screaming while opening the throttle. (sometimes I cry)
When the dust settles and the tears stop I'm out of trouble and off to the next adventure.

Maybe try my method, It's worked for me.

I've got a 31" inseam and ride an 09 990. Its tall but it doesnt bother me. I just shift to one side and put one foot down when stopping. The only time I fell over was when I was trying to be cool and ride off the center stand.(no scratches at all I had the bags on and wasnt moving when I touched the ground):D It is a little harder when riding 2 up though.

Should not be a problem, I would say you are over the average LC8 owner. I think Will LC8 has a 24" inseam :evil:evil:evil

I test-rode a 990 ADV and was able to handle it just fine with my 29" inseam. (KTM's pure dirt bikes, however, are too tall for me to get comfortable with.) The 990 Adv sags a bit when you sit on it, and the seat is narrow, so it's easier to get your feet on the ground than you might think. I ultimately got an SM-T, which has essentially the same seat height.

I've got a 950 with a 29 inseam and put 20k miles on it dirt and commuting. Love it. I sliced the seat down and put memory foam in the seat which makes the height and inch or so lower. I also did this to my 450 I just bought but havn't rode it yet for a report.

30" inseam, S suspenders, low gel seat. I cant touch the ground, I can only dab one foot, but that never stopped me before, you get used it. Your butt is not glued to seat, you can actually scoot off of it to get a foot down. Just make sure you choose the uphill side to plant your foot. :rofl

I mostly ride dirt bikes so I'm used to very tall bikes where I cant even dab a foot with my butt squarely on the seat. Like I mentioned, your butt is not glued to the seat.

Of course you will drop you bike from time to time, but its not that big of a deal IMO.

32 inch inseem and I ride off road with no problems. Do you have any off road experience? If so it shouldnt be a problem. Like someone before said if you are inclined to let the inseem be a problem then it would. Never even crossed my mind when thinking about a purchase of a 950.

I'm 5'6' and have a 31 inch inseam and the 990 adv is my first bike. My bike is pretty much stock but there are seat options that will bring the height down about an inch if you want to, as for lowering the bike, i would have to agree, that's blasphemy. If there are any issues they'll be in your head.

This is the approach i have taken, seems to be working so far!:lol3

I have 30" inseam. This is me on my 2004. That bike is an inch taller in the saddle then the 2006 or later models. Not bad, but I have dropp0ed it a few times while foot dabbing in the rough. I would think the new models would be perfect seat height.

I'm 5'6" with a 29" inseem. I have problems finding jeens in a 33 waist X 29 inseem, but not rinding my 2005 950 adventure :rofl . I would stay away from the "S" or "R" 10" travel models unless you will never need to put a foot down. With the regular 8" models as long as you have the stepped seat you'll be fine. The stepped seat was stock on the 2006 and later models and run about $170 to update an older bike. Mine came with the lower seat . I can put the balls of both feet down or one foot flat. Just go for it man. They are such a well balanced bike and ride so much better than anything else like it. It is so worth it :evil

I.m 5'11" 32" inseam and use a Reznoso seat to raise my height to have more space between ass and pegs.
Worked well but had to have Trail Tricks lower it 1" cuz my balls keep me from touching the ground...:ricky

I'm in the same boat as you. Here's what I found though: After looking at other bikes like the 1200gs, Buell Uly, V-Strom etc...the KTM felt the best by far. Like another poster said, the narrow seat helps. I think the thing that really gets it done is the center of gravity/weight distribution. I'm on my toes at a stop, but it feels MUCH more in control than the other bikes.

Once the snow clears out, go check one out. It will be all over from there, you'll be signing the paperwork in no time.
