What temperature range have you found suitable for the Dakar Pants? How about layering. If you layer, what material do you use? Jeans, poly thermals, under armor? I'm particularly interested in the cold side of the range as I have a pair of Mojaves if it's gonna be above 80°ish.
I prefer not to ride at highway speeds wearing Dakar pants if the temperature is below 40 degrees F. The Dakar pants I use are the style which was sold new six months ago. The problem is that unless your under-layers are windproof, the wind WILL go through the vents in the Dakar pants and if you are riding at higher speed for more than a few minutes this will cause body parts most of us prefer not to chill to become chilled. The crotch vents on the older version of the Dakar should have been designed such that the vent could be closed, but this is not the case. Perhaps the newer Dakar design has been improved in this regard; the guys at Atomic Moto should be able to tell you whether that is true or not. I think when it gets colder you're better off with Gore-Tex pants because they are more windproof, but of course when it gets hot you'll suffer wearing the Gore Tex pants more than you might with a pair of well-vented warm weather pants which are not waterproof. If all your riding is off road and at lower speeds, you can probably wear the Dakar pants into much colder temperatures. But for me dual sport riding usually involves some higher speed pavement so I don't wear the Dakar pants when the temperatures drop below 40 degrees. I usually wear stretch shorts or tights under the Dakar pants or if it is colder thicker fleece tights. Only experience will tell you what sort of layering works for you in a given temperature, because we're all different with respect to tolerance for cold. .
