What mapping software do you guys recommend that shows 3d terrain, topography, roads, highways, cities, services etc? thanks, Andrew
Garmin 24K Topo does the best .................but Street and Trips is pretty close except no elevation....cheap and updated every year with new POI/Roads
Delorme Topo 8.0 does it all and more . Below are a few screen shots from the PC program, it is very powerful and the Topo does have POI's , routing and allows you to add routable roads and trails to you maps, Als can save all your track files as a "DRAW LAYER" to put as an overlay on the GPS, and on the handheld GPS ( PN40) . But you have to look outside the mighty Garmin tent to find some very cool products.
thanks rwamf I am going to buy Topo USA 8.0 do you know if that software compatible with windows 7? (it doesn't say on the site nay or yay) what gps do use with it? ( I was going to go the garmin route for that) thanks, Andrew
Not positive but I think DeLorme Topo USA 8 is for use with DeLorme GPS units, not Garmin GPS units. It can be loaded to any Windows PC but with one possible exception can not interface with a non DeLorme GPS units. The exception is that you may be able, using a NMEA standard communication protocol, to do live tracking with a Laptop and a GPS which supports NMEA. Not all do. And real time position only from the GPS with TOPO 8 as the user PC interface. Bruce
Here are the GPS units I am interested in getting besides the DeLorme unit Garmin 78s, 78sc or the Oregon 550 series has anyone used Topo 8 with these units? thanks, Andrew
So I got the software last night I have been playing around with it a little bit, I am a little disappointed it does not have some of the roads & trails that I have on my paper map but oh well. When riding on the trails with the GPS unit do you have to manually select waypoints to create a track (route) or does it have a feature that automatically sets waypoints creating a track (route) for future use? How can I email someone the map of a route I created with coordinates of waypoints? thanks, Andrew
